Elisha Rightdoer Lee
« on: Monday 12 September 11 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hello again Rootschat - This site was so helpful in finding my Great-grandmother Leander (Linda) Gladwin.

I've followed her ancestors back and found my 6 x great-grandfather Elisha Rightdoer Lee. He was born in 1710 and was hanged on Penenden Heath, near Maidstone in 1766 for horse theft. Does anyone know a little more about him or, perhaps, his father Hugh Lee?

Sandra

this detail is given there but suggests that elijah /elisha did not hang with his son:

Elisha 'Rightdoer' Lee b. 1710 Brede Sussex – d. 1766 Maidstone? married Phylliss b. 1713 GGGGGGG

Duke Lee b. 1734 Maidstone – d. 1766 Maidstone (Hung for horse theft at Penenden Heath) GGGGGG - Henrietta

Solomon was one year old when his father was executed, Duke was hung with a fellow conspirator Richard Ingram, take a look at the court log:

I have not found any evidence to suggest his father Elisha was involved in the crime and the name 'Rightdoer' does not suggest a criminal, he may well have played a part in giving up his son, but I have no proof.

etc.....

Thank you for replying so quickly.  I have seen the court log and was a bit puzzled by 'Richard Ingram', executed at the same time for the same crime.  However, various 'public member' trees on Ancestry.Com have Elisha listed as also having been executed.  I don't know from where they've got their information but do know, from experience, that not all that you see is correct.  Thank you again. - Sandra

Rightdoer is a common name in the Lee family. I have one who was a bare knuckle fighter.
