Jane Ann OXLEY, born c 1867 - 1868, Leeds
« on: Monday 12 September 11 09:01 BST (UK) »

Hoping someone can look with fresh eyes.

I have found the following marriage

Marriage solemnized at Parish Church of Hunslet, York, 18 Mar 1889
Arthur LONGBOTTOM, 25, Bachelor, Cart Driver, Glasshouse St
Father James Longbottom, Horse Dealer
Jane Ann OXLEY,  21, Spinster, , Greenwood St
Father James Oxley, Boilermaker

Arthur I can trace further back, but Jane Ann is more difficult.
The only likely birth registration I can find is of Jane Hannah OXLEY, Sep qtr 1867, Hunslet.

I cannot find Jane Ann or Jane Hannah OXLEY in 1871 or 1881 census; in 1891 and 1901 she is 23 and 33 respectively, born Leeds.

There is a James OXLEY, boilermaker, wife Priscilla, who married in 1832, children born and baptized in Wakefield and St Peter's, Leeds, between 1834 and 1859.  No signs of Jane Ann with them, no signs of a James OXLEY born to this couple.

Can anyone find Jane Ann OXLEY in 1871, 1881, or have any other solutions to the conundrum?

I do have full access to census and West Yorkshire baptisms, marriages and burials.

Hello sugarfizzle

Had a look in my family tree, the only Oxley i have is, Annie Elizabeth Oxley, born: Oct 1864inYorkshire West Riding, England.  Married Charles Morley, in 1890 Rotherham,Yorkshire,
Charles Morley was born:15 Jul 1860 Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, England.
Will look to see if i can come up with any more.

Keith, Thanks for your reply.

Year of birth of Jane Ann OXLEY -

1889 marrriage, Jane Ann, age 21, birth year estimated 1868
1891, Jane A, age 23, birth year estimated 1868
1901, Jane Ann, age 33, birth year estimated 1868
1950 death, Jane Ann, age 82, birth year estimated 1868

No Jane Ann OXLEY birth registration found, no Jane Ann OXLEY found in 1871 or 1881 census.

The nearest birth registration I have found, as in my original post, is that of Jane Hannah OXLEY, Sep qtr 1867, Hunslet, which would fit in with all the above findings, but am unable to find Jane Ann or Jane Hannah OXLEY in any census, with or without father James!!

James and Priscilla's OXLEY's apparent oldest child was William OXLEY, born c 1834, their apparent  youngest child was James Edwin OXLEY, born 1859.  With Jane Ann being born 1867 - 1868, not only would there be a 9 year gap between children, she would have been born when Priscilla was 54  - not impossible, I know.  Perhaps more likely that there was a son James born to this couple, who was Jane Ann's father.

Another possibility, and a strong contender as to why I cannot find her, is that she was illegitimate, not brought up in an OXLEY household at all.

Hi there

Just wondered if you have considered that James her Father was not married to someone called Priscilla.
I have looked for you through alot of records but cannot find a James married to a Priscilla.
I did, however, find a James born in Beeston, Leeds which is next door
to Hunslet, marrying an Eliza or Elizabeth Brown on 24th February 1851.  He is 19 years old and she is 16 years old. Their Fathers are Henry Oxley and George Brown?? At St Peters Church, Leeds
I think Jane Hannah could have been called Annie on the census and maybe thats why you cant find her.  They seem to have moved to Stanley, Wakefield not long after her birth so its not too far for her to come back to the Beeston, Hunslet area to be married.   Work moved around if you were a labourer or a miner or whatever.
I have found over the years of searching the ancestors you have to be a little flexible when it comes to names and ages as we are not sure that everyone thought as we do now which is hopefully rtuthful.  A little flex here and there and you might find them lol

Thanks, Sandymc.

The info given on marriage cert said 'Father James OXLEY, Boiler maker'.
This led me to the only James OXLEY I could find with the occupation of boilermaker, married to Priscilla, who from 1851 - 1881 was consistently born c 1811, Wakefield, Yorkshire

e.g.
1881
James Oxley, Head, Mar, M, 71, Boilermaker, Wakefield, Yorks
Priscilla Oxley, Wife, Mar, F, 68, Boilermaker Wife, Shipley, Yorks
Alfred Oxley, Son, Wid, M, 33, Boilermaker, Hunslet, Yorks
Alfred Oxley, Grandson, Unm, M, 11, Scholar, Hunslet, Yorks
Priscilla Oxley, Grandaur, Unm, F, 8, Scholar, Hunslet, Yorks
Address 64, Grape St, Hunslet, Leeds
Class: RG11; Piece: 4486; Folio: 25; Page: 12

In 1888, Jane Ann had the following child before marriage - the same street as James and Priscilla in 1881.

Baptism St Silas, Hunslet
P102 E812 28 Dec 1888
Elizabeth, mother Jane Ann Oxley
Abode 9, Grape St, .

I have considered the other family, of James OXLEY and Elizabeth/Eliza BROWN, he was also in the metal work trade (brass founder, brass moulder), though not a boiler maker.  Their daughter Anne appears to be 16 in 1871, so too old for my Jane Ann.
