Royal Horse Artillery
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am at a complete loss with my great great grandfather William Page (born c1856 Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire) at the moment.. I have discussed him on here before, He was a driver in the Royal Horse Artillery in 1881.. Him and his family are not on the 1891 census (I have looked on there multiple times as have other people for me).
I keep coming up against a brick wall and I think the only way forward may be to contact the National Archives but I find their website overwhelming and I am not sure where to go on it??. I have searched for him on findmypast but cannot find any records for him...
What I would really like to know is where the Royal Horse Artillery was in 1891 as I believe he may have gone abroad with them?.. Does anybody know this or are their any helpful websites out there that I have not stumbled across.

Many Thanks! :)

A difficult one I fear. The regimental motto is "Ubique" Latin for "Everywhere" and this sums up the location of the RHA, they would be posted everywhere the British Empire had a military interest, meaning in that era most of the world. I think it is likely that there would be units in India, and there is an extensive British India section at the British Library, St. Pancras, London; but remember I did say they might be anywhere!

There's loads of info about the RHA, just type the initials into Google and all the history is there for you (my father was in this regiment). Good luck!

If you are within visiting distance of the British Library, then it is well worthwhile. Go early and take ID as you have to obtain a readers' ticket first. There is often a lengthy queue, so if possible two days is helpful.

Though there were major units of the Royal Artillery based in India I wonder if it would be best to try the Military parts of the 1891 census first to see if he and his family are recorded there. He might have been in Malta, Gibraltar etc.etc. in 1891.

I am having exactly the same problem! An ancestor in the RHA does not appear in the 1891 census. I think mine might have been stationed in Ireland at that time, as his entry in the 1901 census lists a 10-year-old son born in Cork.
