died in World War One?
« on: Saturday 10 September 11 21:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

My Great Grandfather Robert Lumsden Bell (middle name used in birth cert but not listed in marriage cert) was born in 1891 and married Elizabeth Grandison in 1910, at the age of 19. Elizabeth remarried in 1917. Is it safe to assume Robert died in the war? I did a search for casualties and service returns but there are way too many people with the name Robert Bell. Just goes to show how devastating the war was.

Any ideas?

Robert

Hi Robert

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

You'll get loads of help here - I have!

It's a toughie, isn't it!

You can't assume anything, but it looks very likely!

Of course there was always the influenza outbreak too.

You really need some extra information.

Have you looked at the extra information when you click on the name on CWGC?

Have you looked at local newspapers?  If the second marriage is mentioned, are there any clues?  Are there any regimennts the family were attached to so you could narrow it down?

Of course some couples simply got separated by the war, or one assumed the other wasn't coming back.  I know of a couple.  Veryy sad!

Just a few ideas.

Best wishes

On ScotlandsPeople, there is the death of a Robert L Bell in 1956 who was born 1891 (+/-1 year).
Between 1910 and 1917 there are only 8 Robert Bell deaths.
You'd probably be able to narrow that down by area.

What is Elizabeth's marital status on her 2nd marriage record.  Should show widow / divorcee.

Good call on checking the remarriage cert. It does say "widow" and the name on the marriage cert is her previous married name of "Bell" rather than the maiden name (though she is indexed under her maiden name). Thanks for the tip.

That's good.
You may also have some luck looking through the Evening Times Roll of Honour.
You've not mentioned his location in Scotland at the time of his marriage which might help narrow it down.
These links link to 2 pdf files listing most of the entries from the Roll of honour.

Hi

He was from Beath (Fife). Sadly he isn't listed on the ET site. Good site though.

What was his occupation when he married?

Where are they living on 1911 census?

There's a Robert Bell listed on Cowdenbeath Civic War Memorial, see:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=10903&mforum=warmemscot#10903

The following are a list from SP of all the Robert Bells died/killed in service overseas (Minor Records/Service Returns) - maybe by doing some 'sums' you'd be able to discount some of them and shorten the options?

(4th Column is age)

1915   BELL   ROBERT   28   115/AF 0239
