James Turnbull Steel
« on: Saturday 10 September 11 10:42 BST (UK) »
looking for info on the family of James Turnbull steel, especially his parents whare they were in the 1901 and especially 1911 census.

James Father Robert Steel is from my direct line but left scotland to work as a fishmonger in deptford would be interested in any reord whether death/census etc
some other details below
His name was James Turnbull Steel, he died in 1924 in Greenwich aged 33,due to illness believed to being rlated to having been gassed in the First World War. we have no idea of his regiment and some have tried looking for service records at Kew but to no avail.
his family were
Robert Steel Head
Mary Wife
sons/daughters
Catherine
maggie
Robert
isabella
james
elizabeth and all the above born berwickshire scotland.
mary born doncaster
john born deptford
James lived at the previous addreses 83 Amersham vale in 1913, later 18 Trim Street, and 339 Evelyn street, all Deptford at some point.
is there any historical society or nearest library that could look at old local newspapers of the day?
i appreciate this could be time consuming but wonder if he may be mentioned on any recruitment lists or mentioned if discharged thru gassing although not confirmed he was discharged. i appreciate there maybe a fee involved but wouldny mind any info on what service could be offered. the surviving grandaughter has limited info but thinks he wouldnt have been called up until 1916 when older men were taken?
any ideas appreciated
we have looked at a james t steel but he was in the durham light infantry and age doesnt fit. the grandaughter doesnt think his middle name wa used on the census etc. perhaps a death notice in the local paper in 1924 may mention previous military service
any help greatly appreciated
Douglas Steel

Do you have James' death certificate?  This will give the cause of death. Ancestry isn't showing any WW1 records for him but this isn't unusual as more than 50% of WW1 records perished in the bombing of WW11

On ancesry I find the old search easier to use. From the home page click on SEARCH 3rd from left on top bar. Then on the far right under the bar and in very small print it says Go to Old search. Once on that page look down the RH side and click on UK census then on the next page on RH side click on the one you want.

Also when searching use an asterick like this James Ste*l. This brings up quite few army records even with the last name Steel which didn't come up when I typed it in!  ancestry can be quirky, try any variations of spellings you can think of. Also sometimes less information you put in you get better results
