Sarah PAVEY b Ilminster c1804
« on: Friday 09 September 11 23:14 BST (UK) »
When the widowed Sarah Bishop, nee Pavey, married William Mullins at Hawkchurch on the 23 November 1841 she showed her father as Matthew Pavey. Subsequent Censuses indicate she was born at Ilminster c 1804 but as I haven't access to Parish Records and IGI has not yielded anything positive I am unable to correctly identify her parents. There is a Matthew Pavey b c 1770 at Ilminster who married Jane on the 28 September 1795. I have found two children for them----Elizabeth 20 Nov 1796 and Jane 10 Nov 1805 both b Ilminster. I suspect that Sarah is another of their children especially in view of the gap.

Can anyone kindly confirm this please and supply her mother's maiden name? Sarah is clearly not the one born at Thorncombe or Seaborough as both of these had fathers not called Matthew.

Cheers

Hi

The 1795 Ilminster marriage that you refer to  was by Licence and the bride's name was Jane Pavey. Both were of the parish.

Source  - Somerset and Dorset FHS collection

Haven't found a birth/baptism for Sarah yet.

Thank you for your lightning fast response gnu.

I noticed also that the marriage was by licence and that the bride was Jane Pavey but thought perhaps that wasn't her maiden name but maybe it was. I will check out Jane Paveys on IGI. I do think, in view of the gap, that there may be other children and hopefully Sarah will surface.

Cheers

Hello again gnu
and anybody else out there

Pallot's does in fact show the marriage between Matthew Pavey and Jane Pavey so maybe that was the case and the couple did have the same surname. All that is required now is a positive link with Sarah and hopefully somebody with access to the Parish Records or who have themselves been studying this family might know.

Thank you

Hi again

I had seen the Pallots before I posted but there was no date given so I gave the full name from the FHS info.

Where did you find the baptisms of Jane and Elizabeth?

Hello again

It was from IGI but when I looked again just now I discovered that the mother of each child was shown as Elizabeth!! OOOPS! The father was still Matthew. This is most odd---two girls, nine years apart each with a given name Elizabeth and Jane---it's not because Jane the wife died soon after marriage and he quickly remarried Elizabeth is it?---I cannot find any other Matthew---the plot thickens.

Incidentally Sarah Pavey's marriage to James Bishop produced two children---Elizabeth and Levi. As she called her first daughter Elizabeth it suggests, however mildly, that she named her after her mother?

We are just on our way for a few days break so I will pick up the thread on our return.

Thanks again

Hello gnu

Back again and still unable to make any headway. Looks as if until the Parish Records of Ilminster are available on line I will be unable to make any further progress. Unless of course somebody who has studied the Paveys comes up with a clue.

Thanks anyway

Hi  :)

Somerset Marriages  has this marriage:

Donyatt (not that far from Ilminster)

10 April 1796 - Matthew Pavey and Elizabeth Leat

Thanks again gnu

I'm sure that clears up the two girls with Elizabeth as their mother---as you say Donyatt is very close to Ilminster.

So we have now established two different Matthews----all I have to do now is to tie in Sarah to the appropriate parents. If they are the Donyatt couple ( and they must have had other children during that nine year gap ) it might be easier as there is now a different maiden name from which to plot!

You're a star!
