Thomas Kerr New Zealand Australia England Scotland
« on: Friday 09 September 11 21:10 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the brother of my 2x great grandfather John Kerr.

Thomas Kerr was born in St Mungo Dumfriesshire Scotland on Oct 1 1817.  Baptised there on 12 Oct 1817.   In 1843 (at the time his father's will was being written) he was somewhere in England.   Older brother William landed at Port Adelaide S Australia Apr 7 1864.  He died in Tea Tree Gully 1868.

Thomas returned to England (the entire family had moved) and when he died 12 Oct 1881 in Wigton, Cumberland, England, his body was sent to St Mungo Scotland for burial.

Family jot notes tell the following:

Thomas' wife died in Australia in 1865.  Since Thomas had returned to England before 1881, he requested he be buried in Scotland rather than Australia.

At some point he was in New Zealand.  He had the following children but I don't know where they were born:   several children, pr twins, died young
Jean Marshall- boy- John Kerr Marshall   Girl- Madelene

The above is a quote and a little confusing.

Thomas' parents were William Kerr and Phillis Bell.

Thanks for any help.

Jan

In 1841 there is a Thomas Kerr (age 25)living in Dale Street, Liverpool. Transcribed as born Scotland but I can only see an S. He is a mariner. Living in a house with lots of others that dont have the same surname.

In 1841 there is a Thomas Kerr (20) living in Shepherds Lane, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, London. Again transcribed as born in Scotland but I cant see it. Hard to read, but I can see no occupation. Living in same house as (all surname Kerr); Margaret (50), Margaret (25), Jane (25), George (20), Eliza (15), William (15)

In 1851 there is a Thomas Kerr (32) living in Measham, Derbyshire. Tea and coffee dealer. Born Scotland. Living with wife Mary Ann (40, b Birmingham) and a servant.

In 1861 there is a Thomas M Kerr (46) living at 21 Tynemouth St, Everton, Liverpool. Born Scotland. He is a ropemaker. He is living with wife Harriet (37) b Sheffield.

1861 there is a Thomas Kerr (42) living at Swetstone, Leicestershire. He is a tea merchant born Scotland. Living with wife, Mary Ann (49) b Birmingham and niece Janet Kerr born Goode Pew, Lincolnshire.

In 1881 Thomas M Kerr (64) is living at Clyde Villa, Well Lane, Higher Bebington, Cheshire. He is a rope manufacturer born in Scotland. Living with wife Harriet (57) b Sheffield.

In 1881 there is a Thomas Kerr living at The Poplars, Sibson, Leicestershire. He is a retired tea merchant. No wife. He is uncle to the head of the house, George Foster (37, b Bolton) a farmer,  George's wife Janet M (34 b Atherstone, Warwickshire) and George's son, George C (9 b Sibson). Thomas is born in Dumfries-shire, Scotland.

I am getting tired now.
There is a Thomas Kerr ( b c1821) married to a Charlotte. They are in Honiton, Devon. They appear in 1861, 1871 and 1881.
A Thomas Kerr appears in 1841 in Larnackshire, Scotland.
There are 4 different John Kerr's in Dumfrieshire in 1841.

Do you know where he was in 1841?
What was his occupation in later life?
If you want me to expand those Scottish census', please ask.

There is also a Thomas Kerr who was tried for (cant read the crime) in 1840 in Lancashire (again cant read where, but it looks like Liverpool). He was age 25 and was found not guilty.

There also looks like there was a will; 24 Nov 1881. Attached to Thomas Kerr, 1817-1881. Unfortunately, I cant see any more.

If you have a look here, there is a Magdalen KERR birth in 1851, with a Jane and John afterwards. Might be yours.

Hi Ian,

Those three names are highly possible.    Unfortunately mother's name is not listed.    So far I can't find a census match.  In 1851, Magdalen may have been born until after census.  In 1861 they may already have left the country and in 1871 the mother was not alive.   It is a very exciting possibility though and I will do some more looking.  Thanks for finding the births!  :)
