Arson in Edmonton, Alberta??
« on: Friday 09 September 11 20:33 BST (UK) »
My grandparents (John William Fielding and Ruth Wild) emigrated to Edmonton in 1911 and married there.
My grandfather joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 but died fighting in France. I have visited his tomb there.
My grandmother returned to Britain, remarried and brought up a family of 2 children of her first husband and two with the second.

My problem is that Alberta does not seem to have data available on line and Canada is rather a long way away!

My genealogical problem is as follows:

Known information:
John William Fielding  (b.1888, Salford, Lancashire, England- died Aug 1917 Lens, France) married Ruth Wild (b,1887, Salford- died 1966, Newport, South Wales) on 14th October 1911 in Edmonton. I have the certificate.
They had two/three children (see below).
My father Harry Dean Fielding (b.10 Mar 1913 in Edmonton: I have the certificate)
Arthur Nelson Fielding (b.31 Dec 1914- I think in Edmonton but am not sure)
Unknown infant (?)- see below

Unknown:

(a). Birth details Arthur Nelson Fielding from 31/12/1914
(b). A story- unfortunately totally unsubstantiated- is that the house was burnt down by an arsonist and in a fire an infant (unknown sex) died. I do know the address in Jul 1915 was 1299 (or maybe 12929), 72nd St, Edmonton (from John William's Army Attestation record)
I would love to know if this story is true (possibly from a newspaper report) and, if so, details of the infant).
Ruth returned to England on 5 Jan 1916 from St John, New Brunswick to Plymouth on the Corinthian. With her was Dean and an unnamed infant - presumed to be Nelson (although she is listed as Mary rather than Ruth Fielding).

I did an internet search using
Fielding - Edmonton 1915
list of names of obituaries came up
1915 Edmonton Journal/Bulletin - obituaries

L.  Fielding, John (child of) Pte.
born about 1914

there was an email address to send to order a copy of the obituary but I can't post it here as far as I know. The cost was $10.00

You could try the Edmonton Public Library to see if they may be able to help or the Edmonton Journal/Bulletin as well.

I looked at the database that was available for cemeteries in Edmonton but didn't find anything.

Hope this gives you somewhere to start to look.

Many thanks- it is the first evidence that my story might possibly be true!

Hey Derek,

There is an Arthur Fielding buried in an Edmonton cemetery, died in 1952.  Can be searched here:

Thanks for the information about Alberta cemeteries. However my Fielding family left Canada in 1916 and records after this date are unrelated to me,
