based on his hair, necktie and collar.... I'd say between 1860-1870.

We'd like to see the whole thing please including the outer corners of the card backing, and also the back if there is any printing.

Cheers,

What a beaut.1850's hand tinted ambrotype. Is this the original?
The givaway is his waistcoat which looks the wrong side, this is because ambrotypes came out in reverse.
This is how he would have looked at the sitting,no different really except his waistcoat is now on the correct side.

Is this an ambrotype for sure? I know the image quality is better than most tintypes, but it could still be one. Early examples were reverse images as well and could be hand tinted. If it’s a tintype, there might be some sort of insignia or impression in the edge of the photo that could help further date it. If it’s an ambrotype, you can sometimes make a further guess on the date when looking at any case or frame it was in. Both types of photos were developed around the same time in the mid 1850s, but tintypes are said to have become popular around 1860 by which time ambrotypes had already been popular for a few years.

I’ve read that large cravats tied horizontally like the man in the photo’s were popular from the 1850s to the mid 1860s. They became progressively larger within that time frame until the mid-1860s when they were replaced completely by slimmer and more refined neckties.

Any which way, I would say this probably dates between 1855-1865.

Nice work Jim, thanks. You think 1850's?

not as late as 1860's.
This young man is dressed in a style typical of the 1840's/50's & I can't see him dressed this way any later.
Also this was mounted in a gilt case as you can see by the witness marks at the top corners.
Tintypes which didn't really take off in the UK until the 80's where very cheap to produce & as the cases cost more than the photo they were usually mounted on card.
