A great big thank you to all of you for the information. Now the pieces are beginning to fit into place. One message referred to "a list of Barnardo's Boys". What is this  in reference to? I have never heard of Barnardo Boys.

It's a reference to children who were placed in residential homes established by Thomas Barnardo and continued after his 1905 death (the Barnardo's organisation still exists as a charity to assist needy children but has long since stopped operating children's homes).

You may find this link interesting:

http://jubilation.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/children/Organizations/barnardo.html

Many children from such children's homes and orphanages (not just those under the Barnardo's umbrella) were sent to Canada (and elsewhere).  Collectively such children are sometimes referred to as the "Home Children" or "British Home Children". There are numerous online links, e.g.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Children.

There are also numerous threads here on Rootschat on the topic.

Thank you Anna for the explanation. I have learned something new. Is there any way I can find out who the boys, Claude and Eric Emerson, were assigned to in Ontario when they came over with the large party of Barnardo children?
