William John MEDCALF (b.1894?)

This is my Grandfather (I think). Does anyone know about William John Medcalf? He married Maud Jane Miles in 1921. I believe he became a Policeman.

Thank you. That's most helpful. It's very interesting, because the 1911 census does not mention Ellen. Did she move out and marry?

I think that this could be the family - the names Henry, Alfred and Fredrick have all shown up before. William (Head) and Jessie also had at least a further five children before the 1911 census.

She moved out!
Working as a servant to a lady in Gorleston, Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Hi Jane,

I've found some information about your William John Medcalf from one of my Medcalf family trees.
I also have been in touch with a few descendants of this branch of the Medcalf family which has easily been traced back a few extra generations to John Medcalf and Emma Newton of Ware Herts.

But to answer your original question - William John was the son of William John Medcalf (1862-1941)and Jessie Marie Jarman (1870-1929) who married 11 March 1889 registered in Redbourne Herts (Vol 3a, Page 521)

WJM jnr was born in June qtr 1893 (registered St Albans Herts) Vol 3a, page 590
He enlisted in the army in April 1915 following 8 months in the Police force plus time spent as a Malt Maker.
He left the Army in March 1919 and applied to rejoin the Police Force.

As you know he married Maud Jane Miles in 1921 (registered Watford, Vol 3a, page 1570)

I wont go into the details of their children as I understand some are still living.

I understand that William John Medcalf died in 1953, aged 59. (Reg'd Hertford, Vol 4b, Page 71)
