If you get his parents names it will be easier to find him on early censuses

There's a fairly comprehensive tree on Ancestry, which cites John Patrick Dougan's parents as Patrick Dougan (b. 1829) and Mary (no maiden surname, b. 1823). It includes a sepia photo of John Patrick Dougan and some photos of their children.

John Patrick Dougan died in Ashfield, NSW, in 1934. His wife, Margaret Currie (b. 1868 in Dundee, Scotland), daughter of William Currie an Anne McGuire, emigrated to Australia in 1887, age 19, on the ship Port Victor. She died in 1939, age 71, in Ashfield. Their children seem, in the main, to have married and remained in Sydney's inner west -- Leichhardt, Ashfield, Marrickville, Haberfield and St. Peters.

Their daughter, Winifred, married Ernest Treloar and she died, age 65, in Marrickville in 1957.

Many of your relations also appear in Australian electoral roll records covering the years 1903-1954.

Re Alan Sharp's post, Theresa M (Tessa) Dougan's husband, John Foley, died in New Zealand. There appears to be a link there.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Given the information available on the ancestry trees the belief is that John Patrick's parents were Patrick and Mary Dougan.

There is a match in the 1861 census living at 78 New Dalmarnock Rd, Calton (reg dist Bridgeton)

Patrick Dougan aged 40, born Glasgow, Furniture Broker, Head
Mary Dougan aged 38, b Glasgow
Patrick Dougan aged 9, b Glagow, Scholar
Mary Dougan aged 5, b Glagow, Scholar
Edward Dougan aged 5, b Glasgow
Margt Dougan aged 4, b Glasgow
Francis I. Dougan aged 1, b Glasgow

Found matching IGI births for Edward above b 29 Jan 1855, Bridgeton
Margt b 22 Dec 1856, Bridgeton and Francis Joseph b 08 May 1859, Bridgeton

Parents for the above were Patrick Dougan and Mary Campbell

In 1871 living at 76 New Dalmarnock Rd, Calton:
Mary C Dougan, Head, aged 46, b Glasgow
John P Dougan, son, aged 19, Umbrella Maker, b Glagow
Mary aged 17, Woollen Reeler
Edward aged 15, Stationer Asst
Margt aged 13, Scholar
Francis aged 10, Scholar

Hope this helps, Sage.
