Information about Great Grand Father
« on: Thursday 08 September 11 00:14 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying find more information about my Great Grand father Richard Andrews born about 1845-46 in Oxford, England. Richard immigrated to NZ sometime during the 1864-68 time frame (still trying to verify). Richard died in Oamaru NZ in July 1932 aged 86. His fathers name was Isaac Andrews I pretty sure Isaac   remained in England.

By 1871 it looks as if the family are split up as Charles and Ellen are listed as paupers in the Workhouse in Headington Oxfordshire.

George is a farm servant, lodging in Marston.

I cant see Richard, so that would fit with him emigrating in 1864.

This looks like Isaac's death

Deaths Dec 1866
Andrews    Isaac    40    Headington    3a   372

Marston came under the Headington Registration district

Oh dear, this could be Ann's death

Deaths Dec 1864
Andrews    Ann        Headington    3a   391

Thanks Groom and Jan the information and feedback looks very promising.

Groom your later info regarding Charles & Ellen is sad.

Some of the names of Isaac and Ann's children are the same names that Richard and his NZ wife Margaret named their children in NZ there was a convention to of this back in those days.

It sort of blows my best guess for Richards birth period of 1845-46 away as 1861 - 13 = 1848 and 1851 -4 = 1847, it probably depends on the time of year the Cenus was gathered.

Isaac, Richards father is shown on Richard's death certificate as being a Labourer so that ties in, certainly it looks like a larger family than I expected. I really appreciate the information it will be a great help.

Cheers

Possible birth for Charles from http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Births Sep 1844
Andrews    Charles        Headington    16   59

Remember census ages are often out by a few years.

Tks Groom I do not think this can be Charles Andrews from the same family as the information from the 1861 Census had Charles at 4 years. Did you mean Richard?

I did find a record on a link to Roots-web UK site from our NZ Society of Genealogists (NZSG) for a Richard Andrews born as follows Births Jun 1845   (>99%)

Surname First Name(s)        District         Vol Page.
Andrews    Richard           Oxford         16   93

That was all the information I could access i.e. no father/mother listed, no other records popped up in the search but the date is certainly in the right period although if he was 13 in 1861 the date only rolls back to 1848 although you do mention ages on the Census could be out by a few years.

appreciate the feedback
