monkhouse
« on: Wednesday 07 September 11 11:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a birthdate and place for my great grandmother Agnes Monkhouse who was born in England 1833-1834.
Her parents were  James Pinnock and Barbara Monkhouse. For some reason Agnes took the name Monkhouse. The only thing I can think of James Pinnock was in the British Army 1830's and was discharged. He tried to rejoin but was refused. He then listed under the name James Monkouse. He went to India c1838. Agnes married a Richard Shadwell in India 1850,who died 1858. In 1859 she married a Robert Currey my great grandfather. They came to Australia 1862.
I have just joined Roots Chat. I don't know whether this message is in the right place. Any help greatly appreciated.

Welcome to rootschat!

I have found a marriage of Barbara Monkhouse to a James Pinnock on the IGI.

The date is 17 NOV 1830   Saint Botolph Bishopsgate, London, London, England.  I cannot see the birth of Agnes, but this could be a starting point

Hi there,

Agnes Monkhouse is also my 3rd great grandmother. Richard Shadwell is my 3rd great grandfather. I have been researching my family tree for over a year now. My records indicate Agnes was born 1822 in Lancashire, England and died in Queensland in 1916.

does this help your research???

Hello Liz,
Many thanks for your email.
Re: Agnes' birthdate and birthplace.
I do not know Agnes' birthdate and birthplace.
I have a copy of her death certificate of the 12 May 1916,which states she was 82 yrs, which puts her birth year,1833-1834.
It does state on the death certificate that she was born in Lancashire,England, but I have found a lot of wrong information on certificates.
I have seen a copy of her marriage certificate to Richard Shadwell, which says she was 15 yrs. They were married in Wuzeerabad,Calcutta 15 January 1850.
Some distant relations from England sent me a copy of her mother and father's descendants.
Her mother and father were married 17 November 1830, Bishopsgate,London.
Agnes is the middle of three children.
Her brother James was born 26 July 1832 in Bristol and a sister born 1836 and died 1849.
I honestly don't know when she was born. I have been looking for at least 25 yrs. I am fairly certain she was born in England.
I have looked at a lot of parish records from England, but to no avail.
She might have been born in Lancashire, her father being a soldier,he probably was transferred a lot. There might be army records somewhere.
May I ask do you know when and where Richard Shadwell was born.  I don't know where I got it from, but I have him being born c 1824,Cambridgeshire.
He died at Thayat Myo,Burma, 30 May 1858.
May I also ask where you rank in the descendants of Agnes and Richard.
All the best,
Neville.

Hi there,

My records are from Ancestry.com and also other family members researching our family tree. I have researched birth, death and marriage certificates to get my information. Although the date of birth of Agnes states the same death year, but different birth year. I will have to delve further. My relation to Agnes is from her first marriage to Richard Shadwell. They had Frances Clara 1850-1927, Richard James 1852-1918 and Elizabeth 1853-1906. Frances also married twice once to James Kortlandt whom they had 3 children and then to Joseph Stanchell with whom they had Percival, Agnes and Alice (my great grandmother).

I have come a bit stuck  to find out information about Agnes and Richard Shadwell. I have research showing he died in the same place in India, but wanting to find out how he died (was he in the Victorian Conflict)???? My records are from the 1851 England Census Record showing his date of birth around 1826 in Nedingworth, Huntingdoneshire, England. I have also only got information of Agnes parents Barbara Monkhouse 1804-? and her father James Pinnock 1810-1859. Does these dates match yours???

Regards
Liz

Hi again,

I have just looked up on the IGI. And found Agnes Monkhouse and Richard Shadwell. Marriage is on 15th Jan 1850 Wuzeerabad, West Bengal, India. Date of birth of Bride shows 1835 and her as 15yrs at time of marriage. This look interesting and matches others records.

Hello,
Since talking last time,I have been going thru all my paperwork on Agnes Monkhouse and Richard Shadwell.
Richard Shadwell died at Thyet Myo,Bengal,India,30 May 1858 from icterus and was buried at Thyet Myo,31 May 1958. His death was not war related.
I have a copy of his burial info. It states he was 34yrs,and a Sergeant in the 29 Regt,
He was in the same regiment as my great grandfather,Robert Currey. They were friends in the army.
Robert Currey was previously married to Sarah Reed nee Miller. Sarah died 27 December 1856 and is also buried at Thyet Myo. They had at least three children, who all predeceased Sarah.
After Richard Shadwell died,Robert Currey married Agnes Shadwell nee Monkhouse,11 April 1859,Fort William,Calcutta.
Agnes' mother Barbara Monkhouse was born 7 May 1804,Ravensworth,North Yorkshire. Pretty sure she died in India, but cannot find a death date. Her husband James, who was previously called Pinnock, was born 9 May 1810,Tweedmouth,Northumberland. and died 13 January 1849 in the hospital barracks,Ferozepore,India.
Barbara Monkhouse's parents were Jonathan Monkhouse 1767-1851,and Margaret Coates c1770-1862.
James Pinnock's were James Pinnock 1785-1853 and Margaret Carr 1785-1852.
Re: Agnes Monkhouse's birth.     I have researched a lot of parishes in Lancashire 1833-1835 but no luck.
I also emailed the Devon FHS, the Bristol Records Office and the Bath Records Office, who kindly done baptismal searches for me,but again no luck.
Also the Genealogical Society of Queensland kindly done a search for me of a LDS microfilm from the Presidency of Bengal, titled parish register transcripts of baptisms 1833-1835,but once again no luck.
As Elizabeth emailed from IGI info on Agnes' marriage of 15 January 1850,it states Agnes born 1835 age 15.
It also states Richard Shadwell being born 1826 age 24,yet from IGI info on his death certificate,it gives his age at 34yrs,which puts his birth at 1824-1825.
The Richard Shadwell who was born Nedingworth,Cambridgeshire and who is listed on the 1851 census,I don't think is Agnes Monkhouse's Richard Shadwell,as he was in the Bristish Army in India at that time.
Regards,
Neville.
