G.R.O. Scotland where is he buried?
« on: Tuesday 06 September 11 16:42 BST (UK) »
Hi, still trying to find where my Uncle is buried.  He is listed in Marine Register, and  with GRO Scotland as dying onborad ship New York 1966. He is from Scotland but I have a lot of history of him, but contact was lost when he moved to Brighton and married 1950's.   Does anyone know why he would be registered in Scotland,  is it because he was born there of whether his relatives brought him to be buried there.  In other words what rules apply when registering a death.  Any advice would be great, My mum, his sister has since died, I now so much need to find where he may be laid to rest to fulfill a promise.

thank you

Hi Hidecote

There is this in the help notes on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?624

Marine Register (from 1855) includes births and deaths on British-registered merchant vessels at sea, where it appears that one of the childs parents or the deceased was usually resident in Scotland, and deaths at sea of Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel during wartime, including Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and RNLI.

If contact was lost with him from the 1950s, could he have returned to live in Scotland? This may explain why his death shows on the GROS records. Have you actually looked at the marine register entry? Perhaps an address of usual residence was included.

Monica  :)

Thanks for that, yes I have the entry for the death, it does give an Isle of Wight address and he was living down on South Coast, Just wondered if the only reason to register with Scotland was if he was to be buried in Scotland or because he was Scottish.  Thanks again, I will be contacting Isle of Wight council.
Cheers Hidecote

Hi Hidecote

Wouldn't mind knowing the answer too when you find out  :) Can't think why his death would show on the returns for the GROS rather than the GRO if he was resident on the Isle of Wight.

Did he die on route to New York or on the journey back to Britain?

Was Scotland the 1st port on the journey?

Was he a passenger or crew?

Could he be 'buried at sea'?

He was steward on Ocean Monarch to New York.  I have manifests with him on ship,  all I know from the death entry is he died "alongside Pier 97" New York, the New York  Coroner was invloved, cause he has a note attached as to cause of death " heart trouble".  He also worked on Queen Mary, though I never knew him, I have learned so much about his life, I feel I now do know him.  I don't know where he is buried, at sea or not.  I have found that "wall" that I can't get over, there is always a stumbling block isn't there?  Thanks, any advice is appreciated.  I'll update you if I find anything.

If he was in port at the time and the coroner was involved then surely he will be buried in New York.

Have you posted a request on the US section of RC?
