Getting nowhere - Ellen Henderson
« on: Monday 05 September 11 01:41 BST (UK) »
Hi, I hope someone is able to guide me, I'm completely stuck.

Ellen (Nellie) Henderson was born in Lesmahagow, Scotland in Dec 1890.  Her birth record lists her as being illegitimate.  Her mother, Helen, was 26, and died 4 weeks later.

First question - I have read that kirk sessions may list the father, but I haven't found any for Lesmahagow, are there any and are they able to be searched?

I have Helen's parents, William Henderson & Jane McDermont/McDiarmid, and from their marriage certificate I have their parents names, but I have not been able to find them on Scotland's People, and I haven't found the parents in the census records.  They would have come from Ayrshire.

Second question - is there anywhere else I can search to try to find more?  If the parish records aren't available, is there any way of finding out more?

Thanks for your help,
Paislie

do you mean that you can't find the parents of William & Jane?

I've had a look at their marriage & have doubts about her age given at marriage. Jane's father is dead by the time of the marriage, but a James McDermont is a witness, so likely her brother.

1861 census has in Craigmark, Dalmellington, same address as marriage cert,
Helen McKee 63 b. Old Cumnock
John Green son 37 b. Maybole
Jane McDermont dau 19  sewer b. Maybole
James McDermont son 17 coal miner b. Maybole
Thomas Green grandson 18 coal miner b. Maybole

Extracted marriage from batch M116054 for Maybole William Green & Helen McKie 21/7/1822. Haven't spotted her 2nd marriage as yet.

The house next door to this has a William Henderson aged 25 coal miner born Ireland.

Thank you all so much!  I've been going cross eyed and tearing my hair out looking for this information.  And I've just discovered Lanarkshire Henderson's on the other side of the family!

I think between Scotland's People and ancestry.com I'm searching all the searches and coming up with nothing and forgetting which searches I've done and starting to lose track.  I think a spreadsheet might be in order.  Still, I'm not coming up with anything on the parish registers on SP, I don't know where I'm going wrong.

You've now given me further information to base my searches on, and some clues on what to look at, so thank you.  Yes, NEllie and Lizzie came out on the Paparoa, a ship bringing domestic servants to Australia.

Something about Nellie's Uncle Robert (listed as her father on the 1901 census) is bugging me.  He was absent from the 1891 census, and I found him in Newcastle, NSW marrying Alice A L Smith in 1890.  But then in 1901 he and 2 sons (both Aus born) were back in Scotland and no sign of Alice.  I haven't found a death certificate for Alice in NSW or Scotland but being a Smith makes her difficult to trace.  She's not a direct relative but my curiosity is piqued.  I haven't found either of them in the passenger lists either incoming or outgoing.

Anyway I really appreciate everyone's input, thanks again.

with parish records on SP, it's as well to do as much searching as possible on the IGI first and then look at the most likely records on SP. Stops your credits disappearing quite so quickly!

Sometimes you get more info as well. I'd searched for sometime for the baptism of my gggrandmother & kept coming back to one that was a male child at the right time with no first name given & correct father on the IGI. Copy of the register on SP said 'child of', not son.

meant to mention that the marriage for William & Jane was according to the rites of the Free Church of Scotland so there may not be parish records to be found.
