Fitch family is a known Howden family, a Mr Fitch taught Biology at my secondary school there.

I have a transcribed copy of Baptism's for Howden and district  Vol 5 1659-1703
There are not Fitch baptism's.
There are quite a few Barker baptism's. I will copy these for you tomorrow.
If you want me to look for any other surname, let me know.

How far back have you traced the FITCH line ??
Is this the marriage for Charlie Fitch
Charles E Fitch & Elizabeth Booth @ Sunderland 1918 ??

and a possible sister Elizabeth born @ Howden 1920 ?? did she marry John Callow ??

Are these any of your Fitch rellies:

The shop was later a mini-supermarket and briefly a gallery.

Hi Bendywendy, Thanks so much for your response.

Yes you are right my mother Mary(Molly)Fitch married my Father James Eric Greenwood, the son of Captain James Greenwood, Merchant Navy Goole. (Have researched my Grandfather through rootschat- it was brilliant). My mother's sister was indeed Elizabeth and did marry John Callow.

I have been researching for a while see - ancestry.co.uk . - James Greenwood

I am starting to build a picture of the Fitch family in Howden. Evidently , from the probate records, John Stowe Fitch and Thomas Fitch were pretty successful to say the least as indeed other members of the family at the time.

What interests me at the moment is my Grandfather Charlie Fitch . He was clearly the last Fitch to run the Drapers store. He died in 1951 at Clayton Hospital in Wakefield. He left a mere £463.19s.4d to Elizabeth Fitch my Grandmother.

What was he doing in Wakefield and where did the proceeds of the shop go? I wonder if he managed to ruin the business?

If you can trace a photo of the shop it would be great. I guess my real questions will remain unanswered for ever and a day.

Regards Sally

Hi Sally
Photo of shop on this page, 3rd down....

£463.19s.4d would be the equivalent today:
£12,300.00 using the retail price index
£32,900.00 using average earnings

Hi Sally
A well known local historian has helped me with some info, Fitch, Drapers shop must have ceased trading well before his death as there is an advert for the same premises by another local businessman which sold Bulbs n Horticulture.
Have you obtained his death cert to find out the cause of death ??
I am thinking Clayton Hospital must have been a specialist place for some illness/disease that was not available in this area.
The business could have ran its course as there was easier access into Goole, where a large market and bigger shops would have sold items at competitive prices which maybe Charlie could not, or maybe he just retired.
Have you obtained a copy of his Will ??
