One of my OH's ancestors was born in 1830 in PreuBen, Hirschberg.
Would this have been part of Poland or Germany ?

it was prussian in 1830.

"Nach der Neugliederung Preußens gehörte Hirschberg seit 1815 zur Provinz Schlesien und war ab 1816 Sitz des Landkreises Hirschberg."
from 1815 - 1919 belonged to province Silesia of Prussia.

The Province of Silesia (German: Provinz Schlesien; Polish: Prowincja Śląsk; Silesian: Prowincyjo Ślůnsko) was a province of the Kingdom of Prussia from 1815 to 1919; the territory had been conquered from Habsburg Austria during the 18th century Silesian Wars. The provincial capital was Breslau. During the Weimar Republic, in 1919, Silesia was divided into the separate provinces of Upper Silesia and Lower Silesia. The two provinces were reunited into a single province from 1938-41.

By today's standard the name sounds very German, rather than polish. Probably why it was renamed to that "Jelenia Góra" cited below.

Hirschberg was the german name when it was Prussia- clear that it got a polish name when it became polish.  ;)

;D  Thank you CGirl and Ownpe...So,

Was..Hirschberg, Silesia, Prussia

Now..Jelenia Gora, Poland.

Looking at the maps and reading various links, would this have been Lower Silesia and how would he have travelled to the Uk ?

correct - Lower-Silesia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_Silesia
old map - go into the right corner below, then scroll up to 50° (above it) at right side and you find Hirschberg with the former german name:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/200e/33-51.jpg

he possible  travelled by train to the coast in the west of Europe and then maybe with ship - from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Bremen, Hamburg or so....don´t think it was a habour at the Adria like Genua or so. some possibilities....
