Andrew Jardine McCall
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 16:19 BST (UK) »
My grandfather Andrew Jardine MCCALL was born 19th May 1882 in Monktown Ayr on the birth certificate it states he was illegitimate, his mother Margaret Neil MCCALL (field worker) in the 1891 census he is with the Grimmond family in Arbroath.  Margaret MCCALL married John GRIMMOND on the 9th August 1889, Margaret's father is given as Adam Mccall, road surfaceman.

John Grimmond had been married before to a Grace DONALDSON in 1871.

When Andrew got married in 1915 to Joan FINDLAY (who was also illegitimate) his name is now Andrew Grimmond his father given as John Grimmond.
Would there have to be a legal change of surname? My father was born on 22.11.1918 as John Grimmond were we really Grimmonds? Any help would be most grateful  thank you

Hi Gillianne,a difficult one.My grandfather was also born illigitimate and given his mother's maiden name despite the fact she was known at the time by her married name (she was a widow at the time). The children from her first marriage kept their birth surnames,my grandfather his birth surname and his youngest sister had the surname of my great grandmother's second husband. But I would think there would be nothing to have stopped them all by being known by the surname of her second husband.

In 1881 John and Grace are at Monkton Hill Cottage in Monkton.John, like Margaret is a farm worker. Is it possible they could have met through work. Was Grace still alive in 1882,if so could this have been a reason for Andrew having Margaret's surname and them being prevented from marrying then. One thing is certain, they were both in the Monkton area at the time of Andrew's birth. This isn't to say that John was Andrew's father but it's a possibility.Finding Grace's DC might be worth looking for.

Hi Gillianne,a bit more info for you.You may have some but here it is.

John Grimmond and Grace Donaldson were both born in Perthshire.John in Errol and Grace in Methven. They married in Methven in 1871.

His parents were John Grimmond and Charlotte Murrie.I don't know what happened to his parents but aged 4 in 1851 he is living with his grandparents Alexander and Janet Murrie in Elder Street. Methven.

Grace Barlas Donaldson's parents were David Donaldson and Grace Barlas.

Grace died in Ruthwell,Dumfries in January 1888.John was with her at the time as he is the informant.
