William Souter / Jane Reith help please Aberdeenshire

Hi everyone

I am trying to help a friend of mine who unfortunately is not very pc savvy help to try and start to research his family tree.

Some details could be wrong/mispelt he does not know, i have tried so hard to access Scottish BMD records but i keep hitting a brick wall.

All he knows is his late father was called James Souter b1921 Aberdeen  and his fathers name was he believes to be William Souter born in Scotland but when his parents divorced he took the surname of his mother Jane Reith b? Scotland ( he thinks ).He then became known as James Reith to his death

I know his birth certificate would say his parents names but would they have there place of birth on Scottish records ?

Any info no matter how small would help please.

You can search for James’ birth on the Scotlandspeople site:

A search for James Souter born 1921 produced 5 hits. Narrowing the search to Aberdeen only produced no hits, bit obviously the birth may have been elsewhere in Aberdeenshire, rather than in the city of Aberdeen.

His birth certificate would not have his parents places of birth. However it would show where and when they were married, and you could use that and hopefully the 1911 census to trace them back to their births.

Can't see a Souter and Reith marriage showing on Scotlands People  Using the wildcard (*) to pick up on any spelling variation on the surnames.

Did James Reith marry in Scotland? If so, just wondering whether his marriage certicate, which should include full details on parents' names as provided by bride and groom, might give more clues....

Yes I believe they married in Scotland as I can't find them on the England/Wales BMD

I have spoke to him and told him to ring the registry office and see what details he can retrieve from there.
