Home Child Help
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 05:14 BST (UK) »
I have been working on my ancestry for quite some time , my linage is Irish.   My Great Great Grandfather, Martin Joseph Ryan, was a Home Child, sent over from England in 1892 to Canada at age 3 / 5, his parents that I have traced down William Ryan and Bridget Ryan ( nee Connelly) came from Ireland.

Martin Joseph Ryan, came over on the Caucasian (spelling) and was part of Ms Lacy's Group. He settled in Carlton Place Ontario.
I am trying to find as much info as possible even records for him and his father mother, Birth Records for him and his father Mother, which is my GGG Grand Parent.  I would dearly love to get his Home Children files to help with ancestory , health / medical etc.

There is a civil marriage on 21 Feb 1905 Almonte, Ont. between Martin Ryan, 21 b. England, living Smith Falls, s/o Hugh Ryan and Bridget Connelly to Margaret Oakley, 21 b. Almonte, living Almonte, d/o Patrick Oakley and Mary Dwyer.

Also an entry in the Catholic church records for Ontario.  At the Catholic church in Almonte a marriage between the above named parties.  Martin's parents are given as John Ryan and Bridget Connelly of Liverpool, England.

Thanks for the info, as Martin is a British Home Child he would put what he was told was his parents if he was told anything, so I have little faith in that record, which I do have.  I have found Nugent Care INC in Liverpool is the sending agency and was called Catholic Child Protective Services of Liver Pool in the 1800, but now Nugent Care.  I contacted them and they have not budged on records and just ignore emails, I called voice and they say that the emails are filtered and passed to someone whom is researching it and will get back.  Well this would be the Third request in 2 years, Like WOW, seems the British softening ACCESS to records is a no GO.

Descendants are robbed of there heritage, and also the ability to get Duel Citizenship due to this, I hope some day this is fixed.

Thanks.

Family History is a Pandora's box if you don't like what you see find a new hobby, only concentrate on the proven facts and not the facts you think you know.

Welcome to rootschat !  ;D
Confused as to how you found any ancestors  for Martin without his birth records, and with confusing entries for parents
If this is his entry 1901 it has him born July 12 1884 England http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=95428&highlight=25
Or I suppose that was this Martin...http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/001015-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=38261&&PHPSESSID=0obri3sspbb40ikjdi0fb8hsn0
I don't see your Martin's entry Canada.... How did you find it?

www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html
has
Martin Ryan, age 3
Circassian, 1886
Liverpool 1886/05/28 to Quebec 1886/06/07
in the Lacy group
destined for Kingston, Ontario
have you checked the links at this site under the Search help section
If he was only 3 on arrival in Canada, he would have no memory of his parents, names, etc (even his middle name) so can you let us in on the info that you have.

How did you get Martin Joseph Ryan's parents names. Obviously you have more information than you have listed and how did you find he was born in Ireland. You must have some type of documentation to have the info.

Have you checked the Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845 - 1958 at
www.familysearch.org

there is a birth for
Martin Joseph Ryan
birth Jan-Mar 1883, Wexford
I am not sure what information is on Irish records

Home Child, sent over from England in 1892
[/size]
I was going by the initial statement so was looking for something close to that...the 1886 entry matches the age...
Home children are hard enough to research let alone one that young...So you have him on all 3 censuses then?
re: Liverpool Catholic Children's Protection Society
In case he was in their care, you canwrite to the Sisters of Providence as this child was sent to Kingston  ...if he was there, some family history should be listed as it was prior to 1892 ( scroll down for email / contact info) Make sure you tell them the correct date of entry into Canada  http://www.providence.ca/stories/?id=29&homechildren.html
This "should" list parent's names, and often the "adopting" families were also listed, so if not found on all census, this will help. adding the image for the above child found by valerie http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/001015-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=97569&&PHPSESSID=qeodsvi6lu7iec31sj8ap5gkc6

Here are the Home children resources on rootschat. Unfortunately, younger home children were often found homes, so there may be little if any information to be found in publications, as children placed into an adoptive home don't ever seem to have anything recorded beyond the immigration info, census if allowed to keep their original surnames, and marriage. Exception so far is the database kept above, so hopefully he is in  it.
