Census 1901 Isle of Skye - Matheson

I would like information on James Thomas MacDonald Matheson and wife Annie Blair McLeod.  They married in 1897.

If possible I would like information from the previous census - 1891 for Annie Blair McLeod and parents.  I believe they lived in Duirinish, IofS.

We have just returned from a holiday in Skye....(wonderful!)...while we were there we visited the folk museum at Kilmuir....

On display were lots of files with details of local people, census', church info & schools etc.....

They are lovely people there and I am sure if you wrote to them they would help with your research !

Thank you very much for the census info.  It was new information to me.  I did know from other records that he was a "hotelkeeper". but that was all.

Is Duirinish a very small place with just one Inn?  Or is it Stein?

I'd love to visit, do you have a picture of the Inn?

Duirinish or Durinish is the most north westerly parish in Skye, containing the village of Dunvegan (castle, McLeod, "Fairy Flag" and all that).

Stein is a very small village, - approx 6 mile N of Dunvegan, a short distance off the B886, on the shore of Loch Bay, - there can't be more than max 10 buildings.

I probably have a photograph, but that would be from abt. 23 years ago, and I've no idea where to start looking 

But I can do better than that!, - see http://www.steininn.co.uk/Virtour/intro.htm, and make sure that you click on the virtual tour, and then on the inn in the first panorama........ and then, whenever you see a thin red frame, click on that again, to see inside the Inn. 

There can't be many people who can cruise the web and see where an ancestor was the innkeeper in this level of detail !!  ........"In its present state, the Stein Inn dates from 1790, although parts are known to predate this, making it the oldest inn on the Isle of Skye. If only stone and mortar could speak, what spell-binding tales could be told of old clan battles and daring escapades!", never mind tales of smuggling, ancient and very modern, - although latterly drugs rather than tobacco and brandy.

Memories, memories !!, - excellent evening meal, - fresh seafood, - a world class accordionist, - and sipping a 25 year old Talisker outside while watching the sun set over the Outer Hebrides 

The then owner operated an interesting policy, - if he didn't like the look of you, the accommodation was fully booked!!

I've visited the estate in the Borders where one of my great-grandfathers was the butler, and introduced myself my saying "Excuse my knocking on the door and disturbing you, but I'm the butler's great-grandson"!, but you can go one better !!

Hi Diane,
We have been tracing our family tree, which in parts has been quite easy as our Grandfather Malcolm McLeod (son of Alexander McLeod, grandson of Kenneth and Euphemia) owned The Stein Inn at Waternish. It would seem Annie McLeod was his youngest Aunt. (Our Mother has her address in Texas!).
It would be interesting to find out your connection with the McLeods and if you have any further information on any relatives that emmigrated to Canada/USA.

Hi Pam

So nice to hear from you!  Kenneth & Euphemia are my ex-husband Ken's Great grandparents.  As you could see from the census post, Kenneth and Euphemia had many children.  Donald McLeod was Ken's father, and James Ewan his twin brother.  Both brothers emigrated to Canada, James came to Canada to work for the Toronto Dominion Bank, but contracted TB and died about 1947.  James worked for a shipping company based out of Montreal.  The brothers also had a sister Euphemia who lived just outside Glasgow.  She visited us in Canada.

There are a lot of Mathesons in the Toronto area and I would be happy to send you a pdf print out of the family tree from Kenneth & Euphemia down.

Ken and I would be the same generation as your parents, I think.  So you would be third cousin to my children.

It was lovely to receive your reply. It would be great if you could send a pdf print out, it may fill in the gaps for us!
The name Euphemia seemed to be a popular choice in the McLeod family as our Mother is Euphemia,     (she's always hated her name!) as was Grandad's sister. She apparently emmigrated to America, but we know nothing else about her.
Mum and her brothers were brought up in Glasgow too. Strangely they always spelt their surname as MacLeod, it was only once we started tracing the family tree that we discovered the original spelling as
McLeod.
