Need to find first wife...
« on: Friday 02 September 11 22:02 BST (UK) »
I have been researching my hubbys fam for a long time and was doing well...Most of his pat.fam.came from Shetland and their records are fantastic....His mat.fam. came from Glasgow and the N.E. of England...Unfortunately I believe that William Morrison in Scotland is like John Smith in England...

I have amassed lots of certs. and have found that death certs from Scot. were really informative and gave not only a wifes name and maiden name but also any previous wives names...until I got hubbys. mat.G/fathers death cert...it only showed his G/mother as the wife and not his previous wife...I know that the William Morrison I am looking at was married as a young man before 1914 and widowed before 1914 as this is when he married hubby's G/mother...it says widow on marriage cert...I have spent a fortune on Scot.People trying to find the right first marriage but with no avail....What makes it worse is that a search for a death of a female Morrison between 1911 and 1914 give lots of results and even results of young married women who were not called Morrison when they died but that was their maiden name before marriage....goin round in circles ...I would appreciate any thoughts on how to find this marriage especially as there may be a child...
Hope this sounds clear to you all ...The William Morrison I am looking for was born in 1886 and died 1962...he married Annie Taylor Orr 1914...these events all took place in Glasgow...His mother was Elizabeth nee Paterson and his father John...

Hi jmg,

William is staying at 117 Campsie Street, Springburn, Glasgow on the 1911 census. With him is wife Violet Morrison.

Address: 117 Campsie Street, Springburn, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
William Morrison, m, head, mar., 25, van salesman (aerated water company), b. Glasgow
Violet Morrison, f, wife, mar., 25, -, b. Lennoxtown, Stirling

The census also provides they had been married two years, but with no children.

From there, I found:

Married 28th July 1909 @ Main Street, Lennoxtown (banns according to CoS)
William Morrison, 24, van salesman, Stirling Place, Lennoxtown (parents John Morrison, printfield marker and Elizabeth Morrison m.s. Paterson (dec.))
Violet Halliday Brownlie, 24, -, Parkview, Lennoxtown (parents Archibald Brownlie, alum works foreman and Grace Brownlie m.s. Laird)
Witnesses - John P. Morrison and Isabella B. F. Brownlie

Thankyou so much I don't know how I missed this one when I was looking...I must have looked at 50 or more marriage records and nearly as many deaths...many thanks makes you a bit sad as this happened a lot then particularly dying in childbirth or just after...must check that out thanks again ...
