Resigned Commission?
« on: Friday 02 September 11 18:09 BST (UK) »
I am slightly confused as there is an entry for the conscription (in Surrey) of a C W Smee into the 15th Battalion of the London Regiment dated 22 April 1918

My confusion is that I think this is Cyril Walter Smee who I thought was a Lance Corporal in the 15th Battalion prior to his being gazetted as being promoted to Acting Captain from the training reserve in Feb 1917 following which he was posted to France in April 1917 and then resigned his commission in Feb 1918 which I had taken to mean he had been injured?

If he resigned for another reason it seems strange he was presumably shipped back from France only to be conscripted in England?

Pete any idea why he resigned? Did he get in some sort of trouble

Could there be two CWs?

What does his Medal Index Card say? There is a Cyril Walter Smee comissioned in Oct 1914 according to the Gazette...He looks to have gone on to work for the Taxman!

Pete,

There is a Cyril W Smee, 2/Lieut, 32nd Training Battalion in WO 338, which equates to his service record being in WO 339/24626.

A year or more ago I helped pursue a case "Craven Harrison" thread about a WW1 Australian Officer who was forced to resign his commission for a variety of petty offences involving mess funds etc. There was a story that he had re-enlisted, but despite following several leads we were unable to prove this.

Unfortunately, being ex-Ancestry, I can't look at the MIC for Cyril Walter Smee.

According to the NA indexing for it, he certainly rose to the rank of Captain with the Royal Fusiliers, but also has a mysterious post-January 1917, 15th Battalion, London Regiment service number and is a Lance Corporal.

Not heroic, but I have always had that problem with senior managers etc. in everything I have ever done, starting at school or even earlier. Can't think why?
