Frederick Wohlgemuth - Mobile, Alabama
« on: Friday 02 September 11 12:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

can anyone please help.  I am looking for information regarding Frederic Wohlgemuth.  He married Mary Soane Sands, although i cannot find the marriage record.

They were living in Mobile from approx 1890 and were still there in 1899 after that no idea?

Any help regarding Marriage, Deaths, Children etc would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hello Tilsley, You haven't given us Frederic's age, however, there is a digitized book on line which COULD be your man. If you Google his name you should be able to read and access this children's book. In that book, Frederick sailed from Germany (Thuringia) with his parents. His destination ultimately was California and the details of the journey are quite interesting. I know this does not answer the question of where he was after 1900, but this may  provide some clues for you.  Pat

Hi Pat,

I have seen this book,  unfortunately it is not the same man.

I do not know Fredericks Age,  Mary was born in England in 1863.

Thank you anyway.

Hi Tilsley, Just a comment about Lisa in California's great find. All those street addresses are in downtown Mobile in the historic area.  Pat

Hi Pat:

While I'd like to take credit, I think Tilsley knew of the directories, as she mentioned they couldn't be found after 1899.  ;) It was a quick search (not thorough), but I didn't see them in Mobile prior to 1897.  I don't believe I checked all of the 1890's books, however.

Since they did live in various places and he seemed to change jobs, perhaps they moved out of the area, looking for work, or they lived with family or friends and were not recorded in the directories?

Without having additional information about Frederic, I've had difficulty locating them after 1899.   ???

Hi Lisa in California and Tilsley, Since both Frederic and his wife appear to have been bookkeepers as recently as 1899 it would seem that they should still be in Mobile in the 1900 census in the same occupation......The surname must be horribly mutilated!  ???  Pat

Hi Pat and Tilsley:

I would think they might still be in the area, but one branch of my husband's family lived in "that area" and I had great difficulty locating them, because they were in three states in various years.  Perhaps job opportunities were difficult for some people?

While they were listed in the 1899 directory, they could have left the area right after the directory was completed.  I tried looking for Mary, since we have more information about her, and still could not locate her in 1900.  I don't believe I did a thorough search for 1910.

Tilsley:  is there anything else, even the smallest bit of information, that you might know about the couple, please?  Also, you mentioned she was born in England...is she listed on any census returns?

Thank you Pat, for your continued interest.  It helps to bounce ideas around, doesn't it?
