This suggests that perhaps your grandparents were not married when your mother was born.  Getting this birth cert would confirm the names of your grandparents.

I used the database on ancestry.  I am guessing that perhaps her 'S' name might be Smith

Erm, I think that one I found using freebmd - I quite often have a couple of windows open at the sametime - one with ancestry and the other with freebmd

Edna Danby was my dads mother who at the time of his birth was Edna Munton, living in Simla, India with grandad serving in armed forces there. I think the one you have found is not the right one. She had a sister called Agnes, Danby who married a ? Dodsworth.

We can't do look ups of the 1911 census, but looking at the free index there is a Frederick Munton in the overseas military.

It looks as if the national archives also have some records of his military career
