Newbie searching for ancestors
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 19:47 BST (UK) »
I have tried so many times to start my family Tree, but failed to get even a start...I dont think my parents existed!!!!  I have used ancestry.com, and others..not one of them have any of my relatives on their database. Has anyone any suggestions? My mothers surname was Smith...not an easy start I know, but even my dads name isnt there, although that isnt a common one.

Thankyou in anticipation of replies.

Do you have your parents' marriage certificate? This will give their ages, which will enable you to find their birth certificates.

Welcome toRootsChat
First steps in researching your family history http://www.rootschat.com/links/0euc/
Starting with yourself, note all the dates and events you are certain of about your immediate family and work back generation by generation.
Birth, marriage and death certificates will give you vital information to help you continue your research. For example, a mother’s maiden name shown on a birth certificate will help you find a marriage certificate. The marriage certificate will usually provide you with the names of both the father of the groom and the father of the bride. You can then use this information to search the next generation in your family tree.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Firstly - we are not allowed to post any information pertaining to any living person.  Can you confirm whether both your parents are living or deceased?

If deceased - can you give us the following details:

Your mothers full christian names, birthdate and birth county.  Was Smith her birth maiden name?

Same information for your father

When did your parents marry and where?

Do you know the names etc of your maternal and paternal grandparents?

If so - same info as for your parents

Hello -- and welcome!  :D

Do you have ANY surviving older relatives at all that you could talk to who could fill in at least some names for you, to get you started on your tree?  If they live a long way from you, you could always write to them/phone them to explain your interest and see if they would be willing to help you with what they know.

Thanks for replies. Yes, my parents are both dead. My mother was Jeannie Smith, born 12/9/1913. She was born at Penwortham, Lancashire. She died in Bridlington Oct,at 82 years old.

My dad was born in Simla, India, when his father was in services there. he was born on 29/10.1911. His name was Eric arthur Munton. They married in year 1934 at Skipton, Yorkshire registry office (I think). he died at Nelson, Lancashire 1959.

My mother's mum, was Sarah Lilian Price (I think). She was born about 1897 ish. My grandad was Harry or Henry Smith (lots of them). Not sure where they was born. Earby, near Skipton, Yorkshire I think she was, I dont know about him.

My dad's mother was born in York. Yorkshire as Edna Danby. Dont know when. My grandfather was Frederck Munton, but dont know where he was born. he died at Earby Near Skipton about 1947 ish. She died maybe about 1950's but dont know where.

Sarah Meyer(Maiden name) was my great grandmother on mothers side. (Not sure if this is correct spelling. She died at Laneshawbridge in about 1948/9 ish. She married Mr Price maybe they were married at earby. Skipton Yorkshire

This as as far as I know...I cant find any reference to anyone during my searches.

Thanks for your assistance
