place name confusion
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 10:03 BST (UK) »
 Hi there,
Apologies for this really basic question. In the 1851 census, some relatives of mine were born in 'Belton, Haddington' or 'Belton Mile, Haddington', .
In 1861 they said that they were born in 'Dunbar, Haddingtonshire'.

Another relative said that he was born in 'Dunbar, Haddington', which I know was Dunbar. In 1871, the same relative referred to being born in 'Dunbar, Haddingtonshire'.

Did my relatives in the 1841 census mean that they were born in Dunbar, or were they born over near the town of Haddington, possibly in the Belton estate area?

Thanks for helping me with some basic geography, Anne (aka nordmann) ???

hi Anne  :)

have a look at Dunbar on here -

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/

there's a north belton , south belton , and old belton near Dunbar

if the census is on the freeCEN website you can look at the neighbouring addresses to establish exactly where they are  :-\

Hi Anne

The county (East Lothian) was formerly known as Haddingtonshire, so "Dunbar, Haddington" meant Dunbar in the county of Haddingtonshire.

:D Thank you Ev for the map of Dunbar.  Especially thank you for the suggestion of going back to the addresses on the censuses & seeing what the neighbours say about where they lived!

 8) Thank you Hibee - this is exactly the sort of confirmation I needed to show that I was not misinterpreting names & places.

Regards Anne (aka Nordmann) :)

Hi Ev,
Fantastic  map! I've found all the Beltons & also Dean Mill, which I couldn't find any other reference to!
Thanks, Anne aka Nordmann)
