who was john chrichton?
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 21:24 BST (UK) »
and before anyone says " the character out of that sci fi programme farscape" haha. no seriously. my friends house has been in her husbands family for at least 4 generations. but neither of them have the surname of chrichton nor has there been anyone of that surname for several generations. she found an old bible in the attic. but its no ordinary bible. its one that a priest would own. its got all the tables about finding out when the religious holidays are, and ordaining other priests, an has that its taken from the original by james the king 1502. it has a silver fastening with the words john chrichton 1st jan 1874 on the inside.
she is intrigued. is there any way we can find out who this man was without doing her family tree. as shes not interested in that. is there anywhere we can find out if there was a priest etc in that era with that name. we are in norfolk.

There is no one of that name in the 1874 Crockford's Clerical Directory. Chrichton appears to be a Scottish name.
its got all the tables about finding out when the religious holidays are, and ordaining other priests,

These are in the Book of Common Prayer, and not the Bible. The contents of The Book of Common Prayer include "The Form and Manner of Making , Ordaining, and Consecrating of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons."

yeah thats right. its one of those. got how to do funerals, marriages, funerals at sea, how to attend the sick and dying, how to do baptisms, and also when and how to pray by the phases of the moon.
if its a scottish name then iv no idea what he was doing in norfolk. other than perhaps he was sent there.
my friends husband died xmas time and she was clearing out the house as its been sold when we found it.

well our one has this silver clasp with the above inscription on it. which i am assuming is the owner of the said book. perhaps it was awarded to him when he was made up or something like that. as we are not in the least bit religious it isnt of that importance. just the fact that she would like to know who he was.

There are many variants of this surname eg Crichton, Creighton etc etc; I suspect it would not be a particularly easy name to trace, especially if you try to do so as a stand-alone procedure rather than following a family line.
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
