Ewyas Harold
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 20:27 BST (UK) »
The first husband of my aunty died in Ewyas Harold.

Arthur Llewellyn died at The Haven, Ewyas Harold, Dore, Herefordshire on 21 July 1930, aged 38.  The cause of death was Pulmonary Embolism, Mitral Valve Disease and Rheumatic Fever.  The death was notified by Watkin Jones, Uncle, who was present at the death.  There was no post mortem.

I wondered if anyone knew if The Haven was a private house or a nursing home/rest home.

Thanks

Ann

Will keep on looking for you, but in 1913 a John James Walby was living there.  He gives his profession as builder/contractor.  Perhaps using this name, you could identify the house on the 1911 census and see how many rooms etc the building has.

ah, good thinking, never thought of that.  Thanks for that info and also for the 1913 occupant

Ann

Have now looked at the census and it was a six roomed house, although it does say that The Haven is Pontrilas.

Yes, that was the place of death and it definitely sounded like he needed something, unless he had gone to the countryside for some fresh air and then got worse instead of better.

Have now looked at the census and it was a six roomed house, although it does say that The Haven is Pontrilas.

Pontrilas & Ewyas Harold are neighbouring villages seperated by the main Hereford to Monmouth road so The Haven may be on the edge of one of these villages.

""Dore", which was refered to in the OP could be Abbey Dore which is the neighbouring village on the opposite side to Pontilas.

If you dont have any luck with The Haven, just shout & I will phone a guy who has lived & worked in Pontrilas & Ewyas Harold for many years. He may know some history.
My Line
