Shropshire Whitchurch newspapers 1918 (COMPLETED THANKS)
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 19:07 BST (UK) »
Help please.
My GF. Bombadier F Murray RGA 53336 won the MM sometime round April 1918. the confirmation appeared in the London Gazette on the 7/10/18. He was born and bred Whitchurch and his parents lived on Belton Road.

I think his award may have been published in the local papers after the Gazette entry but I can't seem to get into the Shropshire archives site to search any criteria.

Can anyone help please with either a search or pointers to what papers to look at and where the records are held. I could travel to Shropshire if I knew where to look.

I will be eternally gratefull and might be able to recipricate if anyone needs any help in the Lancashire area.

PS.
Thanks for reading this post, even if you can't help.

hello,

the Whitchuch Herald was established in 1885,it is still going but changed owners a couple of years ago but it might be worth contacting them.

Hello s.d.g. and thanks for the tip, it's been a great help and I now appear to be moving forward again . Why I couldn't find anything on the net before, I don't know.

Must have been having a male blonde moment ???

Whitchurch library evidently hold microfilm records of the Whitchurch Herald for the years 1869-1950 and I'm now in contact with them.

Thanks again for the kickstart.

Hi again s.g.d
Sorry to take so long coming back but I've been busy with other things. Thanks for the further offer of help but it looks like I'll have to go to Whitchurch library and look things up myself. I have photo's of the house on Belton road from the 1920's and I took some myself the last time I was down there a few years ago. From what I can gather, my GGF had several houses built ( or bought ready built) there as his retirement package. I also know that the first job that my GF had was washing beer bottles for a brewery situated just behind the house. This would be about 1896-7 ish. I'll leave this post open for a little longer before I close it down.
Thanks again for your help and kind offer.
