Help Please - passenger records, marriage.
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 14:39 BST (UK) »
Help please trying to find this relatives arrival in USA.

Mary McDevitt but could be Doherty born approx 1858 Donegal.

Her father is Neal and her mother Fanny Doherty.

Mary married Edward Doherty in Boston in 24 Sept 1894 ( family search)
She is shown as Mary McDevitt on this document with her father as Neal and her mother as Fanny Doherty.

However whe I looked on family search at original marriage doc it shows this marriage as her SECOND marriage !  Now is McDevitt her married name or her parents name ?

She is shown on 1910 and 1920 census with her husband EDward and their 2 children Grace born 1895 and Mary born 1899.
I think she is dead by 1930 but cant find death record ??
According to census she emmigrated apparently 1885 , naturalised 1895

Can anyone please help with passenger records or anything else which may help me trace Marys first husband or arrival details or anything that may help.  Thank you

I think looking at the way marriage records are recorded that Marys maiden name was Doherty and that she married a McDevitt first although I cannot find it.  She is possibly born 27/6/ 1856, Donegal : Father Neal Doherty , mother Fanny Kearney.

Their address on the 1920 Census was 56 Mozart Street, and the 1928 Boston city directory says that Edward Doherty of that address died 4 Mar. 1928.  I don't see a Mary listed as a widow of Edward in the 1928 or 1929 city directory, so maybe she was deceased by then.  There is a listing in the 1929 city directory for a Mary T. Doherty who died Aug. 1928, but it doesn't give any further info about her.  There's at least 20 women named Mary Doherty in that directory, so it may be only coincidence.

There is a marriage of a Patrick McDevitt and Mary Dever, Boston MA 11/14/1888.  His parents John & Grace.  Mary's parents Neil and Fanny Doherty.  This Patrick appears to have died 7/9/1893.  Seems if this is your Mary then her marriage to Edward Doherty was her third.

I can find marriages of William Dever to Mary Doherty and a Charles Dever to a Mary Doherty but Mary's parents are not noted as Neil & Fanny Doherty.

Hope this helps.

Margie

I got all this info from family search.  Also I forgot to mention that Patrick McDevitts mothers maiden name was Doherty.
