WENTWORTH- Thomas
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 14:31 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am searching the Wentworth family from the Hinksey/St. Aldates area 1780-1900. I have a Thomas Wentworth(b. 1827) who married Ellen Nelms and whos parents from what I can tell are James Wentworth (b approx 1800) and Elizabeth Megicks. I can't seem to find much info about James.

I would be grateful to chat to anyone who has this ancestor.
Thanks,
Pauline

Welcome to Rootschat Pauline :)
I am not related but on Census data Thomas is born c 1826-1827, Oxfordshire, and he and Ellen Married there also.
Do you have the Marriage Cert to confirm Thomas/Ellens Fathers names and occp's?
Thomas WENTWORTH, Sept 1850, Oxford, 16 153
On the same page is Ellen NELMS

Visitor Ann Wentworth born c 1821, Oxford, who is Visiting  in 1861 may not be his Sister and could be otherwise related.( she has a Mother Elizabeth in 1841)
As no one with Trees seems to have the Christenings only the M/C will confirm his Fathers name.
Thomas is under Thos in 1841 and is an Apprentice Shoemaker in St Aldgate to Thos Davenport.
HO107/891/1/St Aldgate

Hopefully someone has access to Oxford Records for you.

Trish :)

Thanks so much for the info.
I haven't confirmed anything with certificates yet just working from census records and any baptism registrations to get the 'bones'. From what I can tell there are a couple of Wentworth lines about the same time so I am still trying to sort out who belongs to who..:-) Thank goodness it isn't too common of a name.

Good luck with your research.
Pauline.

and the baptism

1826 March 25th Thomas son of James & Elizabeth Wentworth,  cook

they also had an Elizabeth in 1820 and a Mary Ward Wentworth who was baptised and buried in 1832

1861
Elizabeth Ann Wentworth aged 39 sp d/o James Wentworth, college servant married William Griffiths aged 28 of Twining Glous

1853
James Wentworth age 24 bach s/o James Wentworth Cook
to
Mary Ann Nelms aged 26 d/o James lab

so it looks as though the brothers married sisters

Thanks so much Debbie. This has really helped. My family will be very interested to find that James was a cook. It seem that side of the family all had some kind of trade, his son and grandson, Cordwainer and Bargeman. So far from the other side of our family who are generations of Agr Labs.

It may also shed some light on my GG Grandfather who rarely spoke of his past after coming to Canada as a labourer.

Thanks for taking the time to help. I think this has helped break through a barrier.

Pauline

You are very welcome

I have checked the North Hinksey marriage

1820 June 4th
James Wentworth to Elizabeth Meggicks botp
witnessed by Ann Bunce & William Coles
off. minister Donald Cameron

however the bad news is there are no other mentions of Wentworth or Meggicks in the North Hinksey registers - I suspect they were both in service and as James died before 1841 It will be a hard job to track him down I think

Also, would it not have been very unusual for a man to be a cook?
