Tracing Irish relatives

Hi,

Not sure if I am posting in right place but I am trying to find out about my great great grandfather who was born in Cork. I did subscribe to Ancestry for a year but do not know anything about tracing Irish Ancestry.

His name was Thomas Day and he is listed on the 1881 census as born in Cork about 1833 and residing at St.Ann's Road , Rotheram, occupation steam boiler maker.  In 1891 he is at Commercial Street, Middlesbrough but birth date estimated 1836.

I cannot trace him prior to 1881 and if anyone could give me some pointers on how to go about this it would be much appreciated

Thomas was born well before the start of civil records in Ireland, so you would need to check for church records for him. You would need to establish where in Co. Cork he came from to start a search.

Do you know where and when Thomas married ?

If a marriage cert could be located it would give you his father's name and occupation, which could help

Haven't been able to trace, his wife Elizabeth was from Kidderminster, they had their first child in West Bromwich 1861, on freeBMD there is a marriage in Aston 1859 but not sure if this is the right one, I could take a gamble on ordering the certificate but Aston doesn't sound quite right. Yes, a marriage certificate would be a great help. Thanks again.

I had a quick look at the 1881 return (Ref : RG11 - piece 4672 /  Folio 123 /  page 9 and 10) , and it looks like all of the children were born in England. Locations mentioned include West Bromwich, Derby and and what looks like York, 'Rawmarsh'  These might be locations to check for earlier returns.

It's also worth checking later census returns for Thomas, as these sometimes give a more detailed place of birth.

I think this might be a possible birth match for one of the younger children listed on the 1881 return ... the district is correct for Rawmarsh.

  District : Rotherham
  Name : Lucy Day
  Volume : 9c   
  Page : 629

If it's the correct one, then a cert would give you Elizabeth's maiden name, and help narrow down the right marriage.

Thanks Shane, yes you had just got me thinking about ordering the birth certificate of the youngest child James born 1861 in West Bromwich as this would be the earliest record I can trace, my great grandmother Rose Hannah was born after in Derby, it seems they kept moving north, maybe for his work. I thought I had Rose' birth cert but do not seem to so it would also be a good idea to order hers as well.

Hi Shane, really sorry to bother you again but you were so helpful last time 

I have now received from the GRO the birth certificate of Lucy Day which records the mothers maiden name as Davis.

My problem now is I still cannot trace the marriage of Thomas Day and Elizabeth. I would imagine the marriage probably would have been maybe around a year before the first child James was born in 1861 in West Bromwich and in that vicinity. I have checked back to 1855 and although I can find marriages for both names I cannot find them occuring on the same page. I would have thought it unlikely that Elizabeth being born in Kidderminster would have gone to Ireland to marry Thomas and them then settle in England. All supposition obviously.

Have you any idea where I go from here?
