Edward Keating
« on: Monday 29 August 11 21:07 BST (UK) »
Hi
Looking for information on my Great Great Grandfather.

His service records give some conflicting information and indicate he was born around 1853/54 in Adam & Eve parish Dublin.
He had (or was) serving in the Royal Longford Militia.
His next of kin (mother) was recorded as C. Keating of Saxon Place in June 1876 when he enlisted in the British Army aged 22.
He served in the East Indies from Nov 1876 to May 1882
From June to August 1882 he joined the Army reserve in Dublin District
He re-enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry in August 1882 until June 1889.

His intended place of residence on final discharge was recorded as 22 Bridge street, Dublin (however, I can't determine whether this was recorded at enlistment in 1876, when he finished his first spell in 1882 or his final discharge in 1889.

On his wedding certificate his father (also Edward) was recorded as a Hatter (deceased) in Feb 1886

Can anyone help finding his birthplace, date and his parents records?

Thanks

Mike

I've never heard of a parish (RC or Civil) in Dublin city or County named 'Adam & Eve'

Hi Shane

Thanks for the reply.

I believe it was the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Merchants Quay (from Google)

I dont believe that was a parish church though.. maybe a chapel of ease to one of the southside parishes - maybe SS. Michael & St. John

Records for SS Michael & John, and some of the others on the list above, are included on www.irishgenealogy.ie

re the two addresses mentioned

22 Bridge Street - there are two Bridge Streets in Dublin city, an upper and lower. Bridge St Lwr is off Merchant's Quay and so close to the convent mentioned earlier.

In 1877 22 Bridge St. Lwr is listed as :

Heather Brothers & Co., wholesale boot and shoe manufacturers

20,21 & 22 Bridge St Upr

   Jos. Allen & Co. Merchants

and in 1891 22 Bridge St. Lwr is listed as :

Heather Brothers & Co., wholesale boot and shoe manufacturers
factory 57 to 61 Augustine St

22 Bridge St Upr

  Mrs. Ellen Dorrington, brush manufacturer

I dont see any mention of a street named Saxon place in Dublin city in the 1870s - I checked street listing from 1872, and indexes from 1877 and 1879.

Hi Shane

Thanks again for taking the time to search. Looks like it wont be as easy as I thought.

The Saxon Place reference is a bit strange, haven't found any link at all, possibly recorded on his service record incorrectly?

Didn't come up with anything on the irishgenealogy site either although all the records may not have been transcribed I guess

Also the "Royal Longford Militia, if he was born in Dublin why would he have served with them?

I'm off on holiday for a week or so but plenty of food for thought?

Thanks again

Mike
