Help Please - FOWLER Family
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 12:00 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall with this family and any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
My Great Grandfather was William Henry Fowler. He married in Australia in 1912 and according to his marriage certificate he was born in Queenstown, Cork and his age was 27 (b. approx 1885).

His parents are listed as Thomas Fowler (occupation: Printer) and Margaret Scott.
There is a discrepency between the marriage and death certificates for his birthdate of 2 years. So I believe he was born between 1883-1885 - approx. His death certificate also states he had been in Australia for 10 years.

1. Would anyone be able to shed some light on when/how he came to be in Australia - I have not been able to find any shipping records for him.
2. Can anyone confirm exactly where in Ireland he was born, siblings if they exist and parents marriage details.

I know this is alot to ask, but I am hoping there is someone out there who is a genius at searching for Irish records as I have failed miserably.

I did apply for a search for his birth certificate at Roscommon in 2008 using the following information:
William Henry Fowler
Born, Queenstown, Co Cork
DOB 1883-1887
and the search came back with nothing found.

Thanks in advance,

Daria

I see 9 William Fowler births on the BMD Index between 1883 and 1887 - the only one in Co. Cork is a George William in 1886

see : W. Fowler 1883-1887

Do you know of any siblings to William ?

re the place of birth being Queenstown - I wonder if that might be a misunderstanding, as that was the major international port on the south coast, and possibly where William departed Ireland, rather than was born.

Hi Shane,

Unfortunately all the information that I have is what I wrote in my first post. I have not found any other siblings in Australia - I guess there is every chance he came over by himself...he would have been early to mid 20's.

Thanks for posting those links - I am trying to find out as much as I can about researching Irish roots and so far this site has been amazing.

I wondered the same thing about the place of birth - unfortunately this is all I have at this point. Perhaps if I could find his shipping records, this might provide me with more information.

Thanks once again

I have just re-read some documents on my grandfather - William's son - and he states that his father (William) was born in Dublin. Not sure how true this is either, but I will see what I can find...i feel like I am going round in circles and coming up with zilch....

hello, I am also looking for Fowler info from Ireland.  My Fowler said he was born in Dublin but I can't find records to verify.  When he was in WW2 his Service Records records indicated his father lived in Liverpool.

But today I found a medal (Jesus Mary Joseph) and on the Back the date 1847 + OConnor Limmerick....which sent me off searching.  He was Roman Catholic but this medal relates to the Redemptionists movement.

I am also still searching.  With what I know and the fact that his father was a Master Upholsterer, I also am lost.
