Birth-Chapman-1842-*COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 27 August 11 16:08 BST (UK) »
I've tried every free resource known to man but i can't find the birth of my 2 Great Grandfather William Walker Chapman....

His birth is given in the censuses as either Darlington or Aycliffe and his headstone says 8th August 1842 as his DOB...

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Not all births were registered in the early years of civil registration.

Thank you so much for your replies.....

Alan that's great, i think that must be him. Interestingly i know William Walker Chapman lived with his second wife in 33 Green Street Darlington in 1891 just before he died, funny how life comes full circle... ;D

Much appreciated i'll mark this as complete.... ;)

Hi. I know that this thread was active a few years ago but I am grasping at straws. I have been struggling to work out my Walker family who lived at Woodham Burn and there is only one name that sticks out that helps me and that is Bridget. She was born in 1822 in Cockfield and her family (parents Henry and Margaret) moved to Woodham Burn a few years later. I stumbled across this thread and thought I have found my answers but it has thrown up more questions than answers. My Bridget is missing from the 1841 census and if I have the right one married Thomas Stephenson in 1852. This all fits and I am happy to believe that she had an illegitimate child 10 years earlier in 1842 but it doesn't explain the existence of John Chapman and even if my Bridget married him and was widowed before 1852 why she wasn't called Bridget Chapman. I can't find any other Bridget Walkers to make sense of this so if anyone can see where I am going wrong I would be very grateful.
Thanks
Alison

Alison, I feel your  pain.  ;) We have struggled to make any headway with the Bridget in our family for a while now. She's very elusive. I'll double check where i found the marriage record for John and Bridget but she did go on to have another son after the marriage.

Your best bet would be to start a new thread and then post a link to this one as I can't reopen it. :-(

Hi
Thanks for the reply (and sympathy) I have followed your advice and put up a new thread and so fingers crossed someone might be able to help.
Bridget is a real problem but I am determined to sort this out.

Hi JMoo

Can I ask a quick question please? Thanks to your advice i have sorted Bridget out. She did marry John Chapman and I am working through the inaccurate bit of my tree. I saw some cuttings on the British Newspaper Archive for William Walker Chapman, one is for his marriage at St John's Darlington on the 12th Jan 1866 to Elizabeth Jane Bygate and the other is for hi death in 1891.
I followed that by looking at his probate record on Ancestry and it says that his wife was Jane and to make matters more complicated there appear to be records of his wife being Mary Ann Harwood. Did he marry three times or is Jane the same as Elizabeth jane? Just when you solve one bit it throws up another.
