Marriage look up
« on: Thursday 25 August 11 21:44 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

This could possibly be the vaguest request ever!

I am trying to find a marriage record for Charles Hinton and Amelia (insert surname here) to find Amelia’s surname.

This is what I know...

Amelia born approx 1840 in Birmingham & Charles Hinton born no idea in haven’t got a clue

Amelia and Charles had 2 children

Charles Hinton born approx 1861 in Islington, Middlesex (1871 census), Lon M, Islington; St Luke (1891 census), St Luke, London, (1901 census).

William F Hinton born approx 1868 in Pimlico, Middlesex, (1871 census), London, Middlesex, England (1891 census), St Georges; West London, London, England (1891 census) Pimlico, London, England (1901 census).

Charles Hinton died between William being born in approx 1868 and 1871 as Charles is not listed on the 1871 census and Amelia is listed as a widow.

I have searched for them on the 1861 census as Charles junior was born in approx 1861 but I have not been able to find anything.

I have also tried to order the birth certificate for Charles junior twice to find the maiden name of Amelia but both requests have come back as not found. I have ordered the birth certificate for William but have had nothing back yet.

Charles and Amelia could have got married in Birmingham given Amelia is from Birmingham, thought I would post on here first as Charles junior was born in Islington...or so the census’ state...

If anyone can help I would be so grateful.

Many thanks
April

Sorry forgot to mention, a birth record does come up for

Charles Frederick Hinton
Jan-Feb-Mar 1862
Islington
Greater London, London, Middlesex
1b
238

This isn't the right Charles junior

Also 3 records come up for William Hinton in Middlesex for 1867/8 but I was waiting for the birth cert to see if any were correct.

Hello

I have the marraige certificate for Charles Hinton Junior and his fathers name is down as Charles Hinton. I'd have thought it would just state father unkown.

Also Amelia is listed as a widow in all on the census'

Hi

William F born circa 1867/8 (on censuses) consistently gives a birthplace of Pimlico which is in Westminster so this would be the birth registration that would fit.

Births Sep 1867
Hinton  William Frederick     Westminster  1a 344

If the brothers were illegitmate then they may not have had the same fathers and it is less likely there will be a father's name on the birth certificates.

see this information for father's names on birth certificates

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/births.htm#COL4

Young illegitimate children may not get enumerated on censuses. On the 1871 census Charles' age is given as 10 which if accurate would be a birth year of circa 1860/1 (age given on the day of the census which in the case of 1871 was 2nd April. If the census entry Jennifer has found is correct it doesn't rule out a possible birth before the 1861 census. Amelia as a servant would be unlikely to have had a child with her in her employers' household.
Has this birth certificate proved to be incorrect?

Births Dec 1860
HINTON  Charles Henry    Islington  1b 266

For propriety's sake when illegitimate people married, if they married where they were not known, they often presented themselves as legitimate with a father's name in many cases the same as their own e.g. their father's name may have been Charles but if they are illegitimate it is unlikely to be Hinton. Equally for propriety's sake women listed themselves as widows on censuses. London was a very transient anonymous population so when you moved around at your new rented accomodation, no matter what your neighbours might think, you didn't introduce yourself as an unmarried mother you told them you were a widow and that is also what you stated on the census return. These records are only as good as the information given. There were no foolproof checks in the system (and still aren't for censuses) until the second half of the C20th.

There is an Amelia Hinton born Birmingham on the 1851 census with parents Joseph and Sarah who is a possibility for the Amelia on the 1861 census. Joseph was a cabinet case maker. He left a will proved 11th September 1871 at Birmingham.
