Deacons Close certainly did exist it is listed under its own name in the directories - at least into the 1870's (Deacons Close 22 Caltonmouth). Whether it was a single building or a block of dwellings is another matter.

As to the boys being left on their own the 12 year old would have been considered an adult and the parents may have been at work at the time of the census ... no real "child" protection laws at that time.
