Hi

Have Helen McCulloch who was born abt 1795, place
51 census says British Subject, Servant Sea
81 census says Island of Corsica
91 census says Corsica

Parents John McCulloch and Margaret Ross
She married a John Dick he died in 1837.

Helen died 19.12 1891 Markinch in Fife.

I can't find anything about her parents or why she was born in Corsica any help would be good.

according to her death cert on SP her father was a coachman so maybe her parents were abroad with a 'family'.

Not sure, from information given, if the birth was on Corsica or at sea near Corsica. The National Archives at Kew keeps Foreign registers and returns (1627-1960). For a short time around 1795 Corsica was an "Anglo-Corsican kingdom" with George III represented by a Viceroy. Presumably there would be other UK diplomats/civil servants there as well as Navy personnel. Maybe John McCulloch and wife were servants to one of those.

found a problem!! marriage cert 13/5/1815 midlothian states:

John Dick, ironfounder .... and Helen mcculloch of Edinburgh, daughter of David Mcculloch, gentlemans servant of the parish of Markinch.....

so death cert says father John - this says david and seems to be the same family - father comes from Markinch

wonder whether john & david were brothers and both had a daughter helen?????

Hi
I think in the 1841 census it says John is a merchant but they have Helen down as Healoner.
At the moment I only have John Dick but by looking at another tree the have John and Helen married in Edinburgh children
Helen
Isobel
David
John married to Janet Bogie which is right
and Margaret but can't say if the other children are correct.
Thanks
