Robert Wilcock b. 1891 Manchester
« on: Wednesday 24 August 11 11:15 BST (UK) »
In 1901 Fanny Wilcock (nee Mary Ann Williamson) was at 51 the widowed head of her family, a Confectioner (Shopkeeper), at 86 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester. Also with her was her nephew, Robert Wilcock, aged 10, born Manchester, of whom I have no other information.
Fanny's late husband Thomas Wilcock had a sister Hannah who married Albert Clegg; they had two children, neither being called Robert; and a brother John who died in 1856.
Thomas and Fanny had six offspring, only one of whom, Amanda Wilcock born 1875, and died a spinster in 1938, could be a candidate for the mother, if the description of Robert as nephew really meant great nephew.
There are several Robert Wilcocks in the 1911, none born Manchester, and I cannot find a death that fits the bill.
Anyone got any other ideas?

Lancashire OPC has just 1 entry that fits:

Baptism 21st March 1891, St Thomas Garstang
Robert Wilcock, Child of William Wilcock and Hannah
Abode - Garstang
Occupation (preumably father's) - Groom

Lancashire BMD shows Mother's Maiden Name as Curwen.

Sorry - scrub that.
Robert Wilcock of Garstang is around in 1901! :(

Somehow I can't see the relationship being described wrong it's just a case of finding his parents. I suggest you follow the Wilcock family back to Rochdale and see if Thomas had a brother who married and Robert was his son or even a cousin of Thomas who had a son caled Robert. It's a long way round but it works sometimes.

It could be that Robert was just visiting and his parents are on the 1901.

I would look for a Robert W*** born 1890/91 in Manchester and see if the name on the records has been transcribed wrong.

The 1901 original census form has "Do" (ditto) in the place of birth column.

So that could be a mistake?

Thank you all for your contributions, but I think that I have now come up with the solution after a hard day's work.
Fanny Wilcock, nee Williamson, had a sister Hannah who married Walter Chadwick, a Licensed Victualler, from Littleborough. They had six children, one of whom was named Robert Nepaul Chadwick, born about December 1890 in Manchester. He appears on the 1891 and 1911 censuses with his parents, but not on the 1901 when they were managing a pub in London. It seems most likely to be he who was being looked after by Fanny in 1901, and either by her say so or by the census clerk's assumption he was listed as a Wilcock.
Phew.
