Parents for Philip Waugh
« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 12:14 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the parents of Philip WAUGH, born in 1852.

The 1861 census shows Philip, age 9. living with his uncle George PARKIN in Long Benton. His place of birth is shown as Moor House(?), Northumberland.

1871 shows Philip still living with his uncle in Long Benton but his place of birth is now shown as Long Benton

In September 1874 Philip married Agnes MAUGHAN in St Andrew's.

In the 1881 census Philip & Agnes are shown under the name PARKIN, living in South Gosforth and place of birth is Killingworth.

The 1891 census still shows the name PARKIN, living in Long Benton and place of birth Northumberland.

1901 census shows Philip reverting to the name WAUGH, living in South Gosforth and born in West ?

Any assistance gratefully received.

Shropshire - Beech, Suffolk - Moore, Northumberland - Waugh & McQueen

Birth Reg;
Phillip WAUGH, June 1851, Tynemouth, 25 497

Phillip and Agnes Marriage Record on Familysearch.Org has no Father named for him but names Agnes' Father I see.
I presume he was illegitimate then.
Do you know if George Parkins Wife was nee Waugh?

Trish :)

Marriage;
George PARKIN, March 1839, Sth Shields, 24 123
On the same page is Elizabeth WAUGH

If you track down Elizabeths Parents and Siblings then it is likely her Sister was Phillips Mother or possibly her Brother his Father.

Hi Dave,

I wouldn't worry too much about his place of birth seeming to wander about - he is sticking to the same general area.  Could the place on 1901 be West Moor?

If you haven't already done so have a look at this website - brilliant for finding your way around Northumberland.  The link is to the Longbenton page

I think you need the Birth Cert of Phillip.

Marriage Familysearch.Org;
Elizabeth WAUGH, Father PHILLIP Waugh
George PARKIN, Father JOHN Parkin
03 March 1839, St Hildas Church, Sth Shields, Durham

So the Mother/Father of Philip Parkin has a Father Phillip which makes sense.

These are my prime suspects ;D

1841 Census
Whitburn Village,
Whitburn, Durham
HO107/299/14
Philip WAUGH, 60,  Ag Lab, NOT born in County
Jane, 50
Margeret, 14
Ann, 12
All others born in County
Living nearby is a Thomas Waugh age 38 and Family

IGI has Submitted Record of Margaret Christened 06 May 1827, Ovingham, Northumberland to PHILIP/JANE
+ ANN, 15 Feb 1829
Ovingham is where Elizabeth Waugh/Parkin says she was born.

Thanks for all the help Trish. I was one of those who was originally looking for Phillip's parents together with daveinspain.

I knew of Elizabeth Waugh but could not find a baptism in Ovingham and had gone down another route. Your finding the father has helped tremendously; and I did see the Whitburn census earlier (though not Thomas).

I have a possible surname for Jane (Phillip's wife)-  Simpson, but have not found a marriage yet.

It would be quite likely that the mother of Phillip is called Jane (after her mother) so I will be exploring that avenue.

Marriage of Phillip Waugh and Jane Simpson:
Genuki: 13 May 1826 Ovingham.

Too late for Elizabeth (1821) but quite likely his second wife due to age gap.

Family moving to Whitburn by 1841 makes sense of Elizabeth's marriage to George Parkin in South Shieds. That always had me puzzled.

Hi All,
I still cant find Elizabeths christening though.

This may fit in also;
MARY Waugh, Christened 04 April 1824, Bywell St Peter, Northumberland
Parents Philip WAUGH and Jane SCOTT
(Could this be a Son from the 1st Marriage?), or Philip Married another Jane?)
Also a Marriage;
Philip WAUGH/Elizabeth AYNSLEY, 30 May 1801, Bywell St Peter, Northumberland
