Any chance of recognising cap badges please?

Thanks Ady - I did have one Pioneer who was on loan to a Canadian unit (won the Military Medal) but that was on my maternal side and this lot are on my paternal side. Could be though. Neil

2nd from the left at the back would appear to have the form and shape of the R.A. cap badge and would possibly belong to the man 1st on the left (notice he has a white lanyard). 1st on the left sitting is a Canadian cap badge and would possibly belong to the soldier 3rd from the right at the back as it would seem that he has maple leaf collar dogs, as for the other two I would not have a clue as it could be a number of regiments.

Cheers OR - all seems to make perfect sense. If it's not bad enough trying to identify people they then go and swap their blasted hats about!

The one sitting, 2nd from the left, I'm hoping I can prove is my great grandfather; either by identifying him directly or eliminating the others!

Do you mean the guy sitting 2nd from left as we look at it?
if so do you have a name and place of birth to check Canadian attestation records that is definately a maple leaf CEF cap badge I think.

Arr, well, yes a name - there lies another tale!

Definitely born Arthur George Turner in Hasting 30 May 1878. Definitely served in the navy between 1895 and 1901 - probably deserted and went by the name of Arthur George Bertram.

I have a medal card for Arthur G Bertram saying he was a gunner in the RFA and then RGA (TF) but can't say for definite it was him. Can't find any service record.

This is my grandfather below and I think he looks like the one second from the left sitting - who I think is his father - Arthur George Turner/Bertram/Bartram! All I know is that they are all Bertram's of some description!

Yes - have his RN record from TNA but last entry just says 'run' - so I assume they never caught him! Most ships/shore bases have either 'run' or 'cells' against them.

I'm probably clutching at straws thinking he is one of the army lads in the photo. I'll probably have to see if I can trace all the family to see which ones served in WW1.
