Newhaven Cemetery - is there a plan?
« on: Monday 22 August 11 15:24 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have an interest in Grave D12 in Newhaven Cemetery - I know it's a pauper's grave and so there won't be a headstone, but is there a map online indicating where it would be please?

Hi Toni, Thanks for the offer but I really don't think there will be a headstone, the occupant of the grave died in 1956 after dying in Newhaven Downs Hospital and it was previously occupied by somebody dying in 1892, no connection.

I looked at googlemaps and found that it was a pretty cemetery and just wanted to add the location to my file, together with a screenshot from the streetview.

It was just a thought since many of the Liverpool cemeteries have plans online, probably because they are much larger.

Thanks again
Mary

Mary sent you a PM with my email, I have a copy for you and the following information
This map shows the part of the Cemetery which is immediately to the right of the entrance on Lewes Road - one of the oldest parts of the Cemetery.

There are actually two graves numbered D12 - an adults' grave and a child's grave - both quite close to each other and I have highlighted them both in yellow.  As you would expect, the larger grave is the adults' one.  Both graves are unpurchased graves.  The adults' grave contains the bodies of William Coleman who was interred on 7th December 1892 aged 51 and Francis Louis Longford, who was interred on 7th January 1957 aged 87.  The child's grave contains the body of Jessie Mabel Dorothy Goddard who was interred on 5 February 1896 aged 3 years and 9 months.

As the graves are unpurchased there are no headstones.  Most of the surrounding graves are also unpurchased and accordingly unmarked.  I have marked on the map the nearest graves that are in line with one or other of the graves and which should have memorials on them to try and help you to locate the patch of grass you are looking for.
