Minnesota Marriage look up request
« on: Sunday 21 August 11 11:55 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a Marriage for a Frederick George Lovett and a Agnes Johanna ? in Minnesota around 1917-1918.Frederick was sent to Canada with Fegans Homes and signed up for the Canadian Army in 1917(his enrolment papers state him as single).By 1918 his next of kin was Agnes.Have addresses for them in North Minneapolis and Chisholm. When he returned from the War he was in hospital in Winnipeg and went AWOL in October 1918.Apparently my Grandad received a letter from Frederick stating he had changed his name to George McGregor!
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ~ Since I have many relatives and ancestors from Minnsota, I used some of my resources.

The only marriage record for a Frederick Lovett in Minnesota is in Mower County on August 11, 1908 to Augusta E. Baker.

For George McGregor, there are 8 marriage records, but the only one near your date of 1917-1918 is:
George McGregor to Catherine McCarty on April 24, 1916 in Morrison County.

For now this is all I have, but I will keep looking.

Regards,
Laura

Hi Laura,
Thanks for looking.Frederick arrived in Canada in 1905 and was resident in Minneapolis in 1917.He appears to have been a bit of a rogue so may not have legally married!
Thanks again

Marriage must have been later than 24 August 1917 according to attestation papers for Frederick George Lovett.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0vz7/

According to a WW1 Draft - Arthur George McGregor was born 3 Jan 1888 Scotland.
WW2 Draft says born Glasgow Scotland.

Arthur shows on census with wife and children from 1920 - 1940

Think this is my Great Uncle - looks like he led a double life! His Canadian Army records show he had no sight in his left eye as does his US draft papers. The US draft papers also show his date of birth as jan 1888.Not sure how he could be in both US and Canadian army In the First World War ?

All men of a certain age in the US who weren't already in the military were required to complete draft registration cards.  It doesn't mean they were actually drafted.

It seems to be a fairly common occurrence for men who immigrated to the US from the UK to join the Canadian military during WWI.  Canada got involved in the war before the US, and I suppose the immigrants wanted to help the efforts of their native countries.
