William Valentine 1751 Norfolk
« on: Sunday 21 August 11 11:15 BST (UK) »
We are trying to trace details of my maternal grandmothers family the Valentines. They lived in Norfolk just east of Kings Lynn in the Narborough-Pentney-West Bilney area. Most members we can trace but for William Valentine (1751) and his son Thomas (1790) we can find no birthplace.
William married Mary Paget in Narborough in 1777 but we have no knowledge of his brothers and sisters or parents and we know his son Thomas married Sarah Garner in Narborough in 1814 and although there were three older chidren and two younger children born in Narboruogh for Thomas we are told he was born in Magdalen for which we can find no records.Does anyone have any knowledge to help us unravel this problem?
Regards Gwenart.

Hello Gwenart,

Genuki shows that Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalen was also called just "Magdalen", and there is a possible baptism for Thomas Valentine in the Bishops transcripts on the Family Search website.

According to that, though, Thomas's father was not a William, but a Thomas.

I see from Thomas's marriage that one of the witnesses was a William Valentine - could have been his brother?

I can't seem to do a link straight to the page, but if you go here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A//api.familysearch.org/records/waypoint/9019204

then onto the dates 1790-91, then the range T-Y, the entry is image number 154 (of 229) near to the bottom of the page.

Hope it helps,
Yorkslass

Well done, Yorkslass, for finding Thomas' baptism at Wiggenhall on 17/3/1790 - son of Thomas and Mary.    FreeReg shows at least 4 possible siblings: William 1782,  Frances c.1785-7 bur.31/5/1787,Mary 1788 and James 1798, bur.16/3/1798.

Suspect that father Thomas was married twice - first to a Mary Gooding 25/12/1781 at Watlington (next door to Wiggenhall) and that William 1782 was their son.
A Mary, wife of Thomas, buried 6/1/1783 Watlington (Watlington may well have been her birth parish), as was son William the same day.   Thomas then married Mary Mitchel 25/1/1785 Wiggenhall and at least 4 children baptised there as shown above.    2nd wife Mary was buried at Wiggenhall on 27/2/1800.

Yorkslass' finding kind of answered my immediate thoughts - as events were all pre civil registration how did you know that Thomas bc.1790 was the son of a William and, equally so, that William bc.1751 had a son Thomas anyway.   You can't even be sure that William himself was born in Norfolk.

So if Thomas 1790 is son of a Thomas this leads us to when/where Thomas senior was born.

I have an ancestor called James Valentine Hubbard born 1820 in Wramplingham.  I suspect that the name comes from a connection to the Valentine family but haven't yet found it.  If anyone comes across a connection between the Hubbards and the Valentines please let me know! (*)

Hi,  I also have a Valentine - James Valentine Anderson b1883 Kings Lynn - d1955, Kings Lynn,  Norfolk - unmarried.  The name is repeated I believe, as a middle name further back.   I have no idea if this is relevant but ?who knows - perhaps mine was just born in 14th February but I can't find out if he was!
