William Spurling, Banham
« on: Wednesday 04 May 05 10:03 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know anything about the family listed below?  This is the household, in Banham, in 1841:

William Spurling 53 Wheelwright bn nfk
Sarah Spurling 48 bn nfk
Mary Spurling 48 bn nfk
Robert Spurling 18 bn nfk
William Spurling 17 bn nfk
Rebecca Spurling 14 bn nfk
James Spurling 12 bn nfk
Rachel Spurling 9 bn nfk
Daniel Spurling 7 bn nfk

In particular, I would like to know if William and Sarah had a daughter, also called Sarah, who would have been in her early- to mid-twenties in 1841.

Thanks,
Deborah

That's OK, Teddybear.  I did receive your PM and understand you have been suffering from some technical problems.  Another poster has offered to pop over to Banham, and I don't want him to go on a wild goosechase.  I'll ask him to hang fire for a bit.

I am in contact with a couple of other Banham Spurling descendants on Genes Reunited.  This is where the 1841 information came from.  Mary Spurling should be 22 in 1841, rather than 48.

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Best wishes
Deborah

Checked my files at last.
Census actually is;
William 53
Hannah 48
Mary  22
Robert  18
William  17
Rebecca  14
James  12
Rachel  9
Daniel  7

William and Hannah did in fact have a daughter Sarah baptised on 18 Dec 1814.
They appear to have married on 15 Feb 1814 and Hannah was Hannah Buxton before she was married.

I have lots more info on this family which I will try to put together.

How are you related to them?

Best wishes

Hi Teddybear

Definitely Hannah and not Sarah?  I have found the death of a Hannah Spurling in Guiltcross in June Qtr 1844.  Have also picked up another daughter, Hannah living with William in 1851 and brother James in 1881.

Sarah was my ggg grandmother.  In 1842 she married, at St Giles without Cripplegate, William Towell.  They were both living in the Barbican at the time.  William was born in Exeter in 1816.  In 1843, they had William George Towell in Shoreditch.  William George Towell married Charlotte Snell (born 1850 in Lavenham, Suffolk) in East Ham in 1870.  In 1878 they had Harry Towell.  In 1900, in Woolwich, Harry married Edith Gertrude Bateson.  Edith was born in 1883 in Canning Town, but her father, Alfred Bateson, was from Grimston, Norfolk and her mother, Julia Mary Ann Norman, was from Ipswich.  In 1902, in East Ham, Harry and Edith had Maud Ellen Towell.
Maud married John O'Boyle (born Coolmore, Donegal in 1900) sometime after WW1.  They had my Dad, Brian O'Boyle, in Plumstead, in 1936.

So that's me.  Where do you fit in?

I have yet to find Sarah in 1841 London.  Time for another posting on the London Board, I think.

Best regards
Deborah

I dont.

I am only interested because I found a cracking reference to the Spurlings who emigrated to Australia in the 1840's.  I then traced some descendants and found a load of stuff on the family before they emigrated.

I will write it all up one day!!!

A contact in Australia is doing the Au side of the family I hope.

I must get in touch with her and chivvy her along.

Best wishes
