Hi Mirambu
I would like to take up your kind offer of a search of the Northern Territory records.  I have been searching for a great granduncle who went missing from the army in Hay NSW in Sept 1941.  He went through WW1 and had service in India, was born in Belfast Northern Ireland in 1898, but orphaned at only six years old.  His name was Thomas Rodgers, and he kept in touch for a while from Australia, then disappeared of the face of the earth.
I have had lots of help on this website about two years ago, his army records etc (seems he went awol from Hay).  I engaged a transcription agent to get some death certs, but no luck.
His parents were William Rodgers and Mary Jane Rodgers (nee Myers), although as he was orphaned at such a young age, may have had no memory of them.  He was placed in an orphanage, and joined the army and WW1 at an early age.
I know it's a long shot, but perhaps you may come across a death certificate or record, that could be his.
Very grateful for any help
Lucy

Hi Mirambu,

Can I trouble you to look for the death of Ernest James Skein/Skien. He was born in Qld in 1895.

In 1940 he was sentenced to 10 years hard labour for manslaughter at Tennant Creek, Northern Territory. I have not been able to find a death for him and wondered if he died in the Northern Territory.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Pauline

Hi Pauline and Amanda
You are in luck. i found the following:-
SKEIN @ SKIEN ernest james, 79 yrs, d of death: 10 Feb 1974 at Tennant Creek hospital, d of burial: 27 Mar 1974, Grave No E13 C/E section, by Brother Noel: occ: butcher, address: tennant creek, probate E105-75/031
So there you have it.
you could get a copy of his probate from the supreme court in darwin nt, but you may be able to get it cheaper if you contact the genealogical society of the northern territory as a volunteer member did index the probates etc but unfortunately died before he finished them. those he indexed are held at the northern territory archives that are situated in the same building as the gen soc of nt. i am was born and raised in darwin and an ex president of that society but now live in qld. i will look to see if i can find any more records on your fellow tomorrow as my records are now housed at the toowoomba and darling downs family history society where i am a member, volunteer and librarian. cheers mirambu/joy

I noticed this when online at the National Archives of Australia

http://www.naa.gov.au/naaresources/publications/research_guides/nt-guide/contents.html

There's many many pages freely available at that link.    I quote from the Forward

"The title of this guide, Commonwealth Government Records about the Northern Territory, seems designed to disguise the rich offerings within its covers lest there be an outbreak of historical research and writing.

Ted Ling and the many staff at the National Archives, in both the Darwin and Canberra offices, and at the Northern Territory Archives Service have put together a scintillating storyline of the Commonwealth Administration of the Territory from 1911 to self-government in 1978, introduced by a brief but delightful account of earlier attempts at settlement and the South Australian attempts to form a viable colony from 1863 to the late 1890s when the dream had faded away. At each point you are guided to selected records, which if you choose to go there, will open the door of discovery into a host of topics, as diverse as Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory, customs, immigration and population, law and order, and Territory personalities.

I suspect that this guide will make it easy for those who ask questions such as, 'how or why did that come about?' to get to the heart of the matter. I have frequently called upon the National Archives to track down historical documents. With this guide my appetite for digging down is whetted.

All associated with its production deserve congratulations. For generations to come researchers will praise them, as the Territory story is told in ever more depth and detail.

Tom Pauling AO QC
 Administrator of the Northern Territory

3 June 2011"

Yes, "All associated with its production deserve congratulations" and yes, "For generations to come researchers will praise them, as the Territory story is told IN EVER MORE DEPTH AND DETAIL"

hi ep
glad you found your robert stevenson, but not his final destination. perhaps he and his family didn't stay permanently in usa but at a later date they may have gone to jamacia, south america or one of the many places outside there. a few people went to nz or india and then came to aust at a later date. anyway i will keep a lookout for them. cheers mirambu/joy
