Earls in Avoca, Wicklow
« on: Sunday 21 August 11 02:07 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information on my g-grandfather, James Earls, Born 9 Mar 1846 in Avoca.  His parents were James Earls and Anne Develin who were married in 1839. He had a sister Jane born in 1843.  We heard he came to the US as a young boy.  We have him after 1870, married to Bridget Kirby and the family followed the mines in Montana, Idaho and Utah.  I was looking for earlier years in Avoca. Not sure if his parents came over or not.

Yes, they were Catholic.  I have some papers from the Wicklow Heritage Center that I picked up 10 years ago when I was in Wicklow that shows the Marriage register from James Earls and Ann Devlin (Develin) dated 25 Nov, 1839. Also the Baptism records for James and his sister Jane stating RC on all of them.

The baptism records for the RC parish of Avoca go back to 1792, marriages to 1778 - so it may be possible to work back another generation for your Earl family if they originated in the same area.

The details are available on microfilm in the National Library in Dublin on microfilms Pos. 6476 and 6477  Transcripts for the parish are also available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation at www.rootsireland.ie

You could check Civil records to see if there is any sign of a death of James or Anne, but these only cover deaths from 1864.

The only Earls household listed on Griffith's Valuation in Co. Wicklow is a Margaret Earls in the village of Redcross. This record is dated 1854.  See : Earls, Co. Wicklow

Does the marriage record mention a residence for the family - or does it just state Avoca Parish ?

Redcross town is in RC Avoca parish

Shane,
Thank you for the information.  I will try and see if I can get on those sites and check it out.  The Marriage Register just has Avoca Parish, no address. Also, there was no name of James or Ann's mother or father listed.  Just the Best man and the Bridesmaid.

On the baptism record it just says Avoca Parish also.  Doesn't give any other information except the Godfather and Godmothers name.

Unfortunately early parish records like this usually show very little detail, so it can be difficult to link further back with any certainty.

Was by chance James Earls married and had Children before he left Avoca Co Wicklow Ireland?
If so do you have names of his wife and children?

From all I have found he came to American as a young boy but no indication that he came with his parents.  His mother was Ann Develin and father James Earle from Avoca.  He had a sister Jane (born 1843) that supposedly came also and a younger brother John.  Have found James and John in Rockaway, New Jersey in 1870 but not sure that its the correct James.  I know from 1872 on where he was but its a mystery the years from Ireland to then.

Thanks for checking and anything else you may have I'd appreciate.
