Lower Tannybrake National School - any information about teachers
« on: Friday 19 August 11 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking to find out more about David Blair, teacher at Tannybrake NS c.1900.

Specifically is there any way I can find out where he was from - I am trying to trace my wife's ancestry past him.  He married after he started there so his marriage record doesn't have his place of birth.  Where would he have trained and would they have records?  Any ideas gratefully received!

I understand that his family was from Ahoghill direction but I don't know exactly whereabouts in terms of townland/DED...  His dad's name was James and I estimate that David was born c.1875 from census records.

All the best,

Stephen

here's the corresponding BMD Index reference :

  Name: David Blair
  registration district: Ballymena
  Event type: Birth
  Year: 1874
  Volume : 16 / Page :   87

only problem is - there's a death of a David Blair of about the right age in the same area... not sure if this is the same person or not.

  Name: David Blair
  Registration district:   Ballymena
  Event type: Death
Quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1887
Age: 13    (est. year of birth 1874)
  Volume : 1 / Page : 85

Given that the father's name matches the marriage details it might be worth checking the birth anyway...

Everyone - thanks for the possible matches!

Aghadowey yes those are the census records so I guess the first one might put DOB to 1871 and the second one to 1874 - don't you love it that even a schoolmaster didn't bother about accurate DOB 100 years ago :-)

Once again thanks to all who are contributing leads,

Stephen

It was the head of household who would have given the details- in both cases David was a boarder.

Aghadowy - I suppose that's a fair point I hadn't considered!
